I figure like there has to be at least an arc of villain who turns out to be a hero before Kubo reveals who the next actually villainous villain is supposed to be.

Yeah, I just don't think that character will be Ishida's dad. Like, Kubo is probably going to go with a character like Byakuya, because he's so easy to hate. Basically a Snape character where the author thinks the audience will buy he's a villain when he's actually a SECRET GOOD GUY, but it's just so stupidly obvious to everyone involved that he's a good guy. We just don't know Ishida's dad enough for us to hate him to the point where he can be a Snape.

Alternatively, Kubo might opt for a character people actually like, so everyone who lacks a brain can freak out and wonder why so and so betrayed the good guys. For a second, I considered that character being Urahara, but then I remembered that that would be awesome and this is Bleach so it can't happen. More likely is that we'll get one of his high school friends getting powers, or one of the ones who already has powers, and turning against them for a villain arc where they aren't a SECRET GOOD GUY but they're still going to end up on the good guy side at the end of the arc.

This is all after the Yammy arc, of course.

Ryuuken would make more of a Snape than anyone. Snape's whole thing, besides being easy to hate, was that there were things pointing to him being honestly good & secretly evil. For good, Ryuuken has indicators that he wants a profession that will help him raise his son, he runs a hospital, he has a good relationship with Isshin, & he helped Uryu get his powers back. There aren't as many examples of his questionable morality, but I do recall him shooting his son in the chest without telling him what he was up to, in a move that would have killed him if Ryuuken was the slightest bit off. And...frankly, Ryuuken acts like kind of a dick already. He doesn't need to do an awful lot to make himself easier to hate.

Yeah, but we know that Ishida's dad is supposedly nice under his jackass exterior. Friends with Ishin, helped his son get his powers back, and let his son go help the Shinigami even after he told him not to. Byakuya, in contrast, just has a sister complex.

I'm just saying, he did that with Byakuya already; it was literally the introduction of Byakuya.

If he's gonna do it again with anybody, it's gonna be with someone who isn't Byakuya.

He just gotta go like "Oh, I gave you your powers back FOR EVEIL" then later "Well no actually it was GOOD EVIL".
