What Tarquin describs in this comic actually is one. If Elan "wins", Tarquin really wins by becoming "A legend", which is what he really wants.

Not if he doesn't die epically. What I'm saying is that if he's building up to a dramatic moment that will change all of history for him and his legend, then what's to stop him from being killed by the Newest Big Bad (ie Xykon) who can just stomp him out with a few spells. That effectively kills his mojo by making him a side plot.

It's a gamble that this will work. A lot better than running to the Sorting Algorithm of Evil. I'm mainly pointing out that his gambit could fail epically for him (which is what I believe the Giant may just do)

The thing is Xykon is powerful, but it's pretty clear that even he can't take on, say Azure City all by himself.
Tarquin doesn't have a city, he has three Empires, all dedicated to his cause. He's pretty confident that he can't be fucked with, and it's for a pretty good reason.

Tarquin himself said that once offered a unified threat any enemy is screwed. Only reason Xykon is still in the picture is he only makes big moves when he has to. He would have no reason to attack Tarquin unless they were sitting on another gate and it was heavily implied Azure gate was the only such gate.

The only way I see Tarquin not getting what he wants is if he falls into the "redemption equals death" trope by sacrificing himself for Elan or something.

Oh no wait he would still win because he'd be known as the legendary overlord that sacrificed himself for his son. Nevermind, he just wins

I half expected him to suddenly die from some poison in the wine just to make it as anti-climatic as possible. "Sudden Stab in the Back" option is still on though, specially now that we heard his plan.

If Elan goes through the entire plot, they fight, and before he dies, Elan tells his father he intends to destroy ever record of his father ever existing. No one will remember him, and his name will die with the few in the generation who had met him personally. He will be just another nameless tyrant in a long line of tyrants.

And then he dies. Yeah. That'd be awesome.
