If, if the voting habits of the rest of the country look more like kansas and maine than the south, the math works out.
Edit: I mean, Illinois and Missouri were basically tied, and Florida was always going to go heavy Clinton. The real bad news of the night was not getting Ohio, but Sanders did better than expected in North Carolina, for whatever that's worth (it's worth delegates).

Sanders taking Buncombe County should be a surprise to no one.

Far as I'm concerned, that just means we need to bust our asses even harder if we're serious about this thing.

So, I've been thinking a lot about this "Make Donald Drumpf Again" thing, and... It's hella problematic? Don't get me wrong, I hate Trump. I want to take the wind out of his sails in whatever way I can. But this instance is a problem on SO many levels.
First: You're devolving the race down to literal name calling. Now, if that were the only problem with it, sure, whatever. Go ahead and stoop to his level of middleschool-bullying-as-political-strategy. Knock yourself out. (That is not the only problem with it.) Second: It's hella racist. Take this clip where John Oliver and Colbert are talking about it (Click to the 1m 46s point): "The german language is so sonorous, isn't it. So gentle. <Giggle> A beautiful language. A language of poetry. Angry, angry poetry. <Laugh>" The whole thing is 100% based on making fun of how Germans say things. The "joke" is just you going, "Hahahah those brutes over there are dumb and speak stupid". This "insult" does nothing but tell the listener that you think Germanic heritage is intrinsically worse than British, French, or whatever other roots people have. So, okay. It's childish, and it's exposing your latent cultural biases and xenophobia. That should be enough at this point that you all want to stop doin--No, okay, you hate this guy enough that you're willing to broadcast your bigotry to the world. You think this particular issue is important enough that you are okay using xenophobia to band together with like-minded individuals over it. Gotcha. (Incidentally, have you considered going to one of his rallies?) Third: How about the fact that there are tons of people who actually have the last name Drumpf, that you're dragging through the mud as part of this? You know that old adage, "I'd call you an ass, but I don't want to insult my donkey"? You're turning these peoples actual real names into a slur against someone. You're telling them that their names should rightfully be mocked, because "it is the sound of a fat pigeon running into a window". You're being super terrible to some real people, in a concrete way. Maybe if the "Being terrible to a large intangible group" thing didn't bother you, "Being terrible to these distinct people" does.

On the off chance that someone is taking a trip down memory lane looking through those old threads, I wanted to devote my signature to say directly to you, I'm sorry. Personally, I tend to consider the point of "Make Donald Drumpf Again" less about the name Drumpf being toxic, odious or insulting in any way, but rather distinguishing the real human being from the toxic (and objectively false) mythology of 'Trump' that supporters are attracted to. Like, the point isn't "Let's call him Drumpf because Drumpf is an insult!" it's "Let's call him Drumpf because we need to separate the man from the myth and have people confronted with the reality of the monster they're creating." (With a side-coating of "Let's call him Drumpf because Trump is the one and only person who perceives it as an insult," which would make me feel bad if and only if Trump wasn't an objectively horrific human being worth casually insulting.)
Like, I don't think anyone calling Trump 'Drumpf' has anything whatsoever against the last name 'Drumpf' and there certainly isn't any conscious racial connotations. (No one chanting "Make Donald Drumpf Again!" is actually trying on any level whatsoever to insult Germans or even make any connection with Germany, which very much distinguishes 'Drumpf' from the racism of Trump's supporters who actually intend to stereotype and insult entire races of people. Prior to watching the Colbert / Oliver clip you provided I didn't even associate 'Drumpf' with Germany and wouldn't have been able to guess Trump's ethnic origin.) 'Drumpf' simply isn't sufficiently associated in everyday use with an ethnic stereotype to merit the level of outcry you're associating with it. (And, note that most of my ethnic heritage is German [and Italian.] Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers come from rather tight-knit extended families with origins in Deutschland.) I dunno, I'd probably be more willing to accept the premise of your argument if there was substantial German outcry over the use of 'Drumpf' in this way. But I don't think the original joke in Oliver's segment was "Hahahaha Germans are terrible people, let's all make fun of their weird language." If anything, it was kind of stupid for him to go there with Colbert, as in the original piece there really wasn't an underlying racial context at all.

The "Drumpf" part was just one joke to punctuate an entire video where he made a MILLION other valid points about Trump being a crazy narcissist. Seriously, its the very last part of the video; watch the REST of it where he makes a long, logical argument against Trump. Oliver's critique went beyond simple name calling and its disingenuous to say that's all it was.
Also I can't say there's a particularly widespread hatred of German people around the world. |
