You know it would be a very interesting plot twist if Urahara turned out to be the real big bad behind all of this. Quite a lot fans are excited about the theory. And it's a twist Kubo might actually come up with.

I should clarify by "whole thing" I was referring to the whole thing with exclusively Ichigo. As in he saw the injuries coming from the retrieval of Rukia and totally planned for his training to turn Ichigo into a super hollowgami from the very beginning. Possibly as a means to defeat Aizen and is less than perfect hollowgami.

I was just talking about a theory a bounch of fans were talking about on another forum. I had completely forgot about your theory of Urahara competeing with Aizen to see who can make the perfect Hollowgami. Granted Urahara behind this in anyway would still be awesome.

thats unlikely, his hollowfication was a fluke, and if he suspected Ichigo would go vaizard, he probably would have informed Yoruichi

Urahara didn't seem all that surprised when he popped out of the hole with a mask and shattered it. That and having researched hollification before and knowing that his repowering process could result in going full hollow I find it unbelievable that he wouldn't at least suspect the possibility. I mean we've got the living son of what appears to be an ex-captain who got the source of his powers destroyed and is now going through the process souls normally go through to become a hallow. That and I doubt he would have subjected Ichigo to the process as the first test subject. He had an awful lot of knowledge about what to expect from the repowering process. Finally, we've basically heard absolutely nothing of the private conversations that go on between him and Yoruichi. The only thing anyone really seemed surprised about was the way the mask showed up and the manner in which is hollow side manifested initially. All of which were different from how the original Vizards where made or what we saw of it anyway. Which is not surprising if no one had been hollified in that manner yet. Besides if its supposed to be a plot twist the author isn't going to come right out and say it before he is good and ready to reveal it

The author typically does good forshadowing though. Like the re-appearing mask in the first place. I am not saying he didn't suspect the possibility, but I doubt he dumped him in that hole expecting a vizard to come out. Ichigo's transformation is a unique one after all.

As for him not being suprised, well excluding flashbacks I cant recall him ever being suprised

Its kind of hard to tell with him sometimes. Like when he's surprised he doesn't show it he just gets all serious until he figures it out. But he also gets serious when the situation demands it so it kind of hard to differentiate between him just being serious and him being caught off guard. That fake surprise he does though is a really good tip off that he wasn't surprised at all and knew exactly what was coming.

He also does bat shit insane pretty good as well so basically any thing you logically deduce has a chance of being completely off base depending on how many different kinds of crazy he feels like being. Of course that is why we love him.
