Since you decided to talk about this in front of everyone here's what actually happened; You were being a fuckwad to more than just one person, I called you on it privately and you neglected to respond until... now. I don't know if you think you're being funny or what but now we've both had our say or whatever so how about you just reign it in right here?

Actually as far as Avatar goes that is a perfect example of what I was talking about. I saw Avatar in both formats and I found the 3D, (as subtle as it might have been compared to the mess that will be Shrek 4 and, yes I'm completely serious about this upcoming B horror movie that will apparently be in theaters, "Piranha 3D" ) to be nothing more than gimmicky. It didn't add anything and was actually more distracting. It's useless technology unless you're putting it in a 15 min theme park ride.

As far as I'm concerned we will only be "in the future" when we either invent practical, a) FTL spacetravel, or b) flying cars. Those are the only 2 prerequisites I will allow for being in the future.

Though Avatar 3d was cool, I must admit, but yeah, definately a fad all this 3d shit.

Default 3D glasses aren't even half of 3D display technology

You are so very very wrong about that. Old 3D technology has nothing on what we've got now. Old 3D was purely stereoscopic which means while it looked 3D it had only one real viewing angle. Plus it was low definition and had color problems. The newer polarized lens still suffer from lack of true parallax, i.e. one viewing angle, but have better color and definition. The main difference in today's 3D is in how its captured. Most of what makes today's 3D technology so different is all in the bits you don't see. Displaying it is relatively easy if you don't want parallax. Of course the ones that work without glasses are a totally different animal all together. Plus now we've got the computing power to upgrade 2D images to 3D images with passable quality. Its still not quite as good as actual 3D recordings. There was also a bandwidth and storage problem in terms of true 3D with parallax that's largely been overcome.

See above. Its tempting to think it hasn't changed but most of the big changes have happened on the end you can't see. That is most of the change is in how its recorded, how its combined into an image to transmit (for the full parallax images), and how its stored. Then there is the glasses free display tech which is something all together different.

I believe that's been said about basically every improvement in technology. It won't fully replace the old instantly but its coming and its not going away. 3D without glasses is here and that's one step toward full holographic displays. Technology advances in steps and this is a required step toward the future displays we all want.

Default I want my hologram displays, damnit.

Hey, those links range back to 2007. Why isn't this more mainstream if these different display manufacturers are claiming to be able to do it?

Price. The last one is an actual product being sold to advertisers and other companies for display purposes. I hear tell of some museum type displays already using them. Give it a little while and the cost of the tech will come down for display. Then we've just gotta make sure the cost of 3D recording tech also goes down and that 3D content becomes at least as standard as HD content to make selling it worth while.

Default That cracked me up.

Ah, very true. Hmm. Well, I hope they can work on that some more and pair it with things like Microsoft's Surface and give us some steps towards things like Tony Stark's computer interface and holograms. I want to be able to put a cup over a little Darth Vader standing on my desk.
