Picked up a 970 GTX EVGA SSC 2.0, had to send the original back due to horrendous noise issues. Depending on the game, the card is either dead silent or screaming up a storm to the point that it's completely audible from a fair distance outside my room. EVGA sent a replacement card, which had the same problems. And I'm now reading about some massive shitstorm to do with memory across the entire 970 line. Really dissapointed, because when it actually WORKS the card is an absolute beast, and probably the biggest single tech investment I've made.

I'm really hoping to just get a refund and be done with it at this point. It's been a thorough nightmare dealing with the noise and customer support.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year olds life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Yeah you might be better off getting an AMD. They're pretty much equal to/above nvidia at this point.

Default I'll admit I stopped looking once I got my card.

If I recall, it was my understanding that the EVGA SSC cards were the ones getting flak in how they are designed. That motivated me to look elsewhere, before the FTW version was released, assuming I am remembering EVGA's model labeling correctly. I have finally noticed a few times coil whine on my card, but it's only under my desk near the computer itself. If you are hearing it outside your room, wow, man, I wish you the best of luck in getting a better card.

At the risk of coming across as biased, where are you pulling that from? When the 980/970 came out they solidly outperformed anything AMD*. Has AMD dropped a new card?

* at similar price points, if not across the board

Freakin' gamers. I finally, FINALLY upgrade my graphics card so it can play every game currently released on Ultra settings, FINALLY join ranks with the PC Master Race...

...only to find out there isn't just a PC Master Race, but also an *NVIDIA* master race, lookin' down on everybody with Radeons.

Whole thing is hella stupid. "BUT SNAKE you're missing out on a slightly less noisy machine that can cram three more gigapixels of lush flora content on your monitor!!! THEREFORE you are terrible human being!!!" Oy vey

970 out specs it across the board but not by a vast amount. And given the current issue going on with the 970 cards the 290/290x is looking like a better option at the moment imo. Until AMD releases their next card(s) which might be soon. Then it all comes down to how that stacks up to nvidia's 900 series. I was referring more to the companies themselves, not the cards. I'm probably being a bit bias myself in that regards though (ironic seeing how much I tend to fawn over nvidia's GPUs).

Coincidentally, a coworker texted this to me earlier today. The 900 series struck me as one of those too good to be true things anyway.

nvidia facing a potential class action lawsuit for misleading specs for the 970

Default Suddenly I am even happier with my plan to stick to a 16:10, sub-1440p monitor

Ha (and this is a "gg Nvidia" and laughing at myself kind of ha)

Having old monitors has saved me from noticing this, I guess? I would not be surprised if the various gamers running on 1440p or higher monitors at max would, though. I can imagine it would be noticeable, if the suggested performance difference in the RAM is accurate.

So there was a bit of a hangup with refunding because EVGA had replaced it. After a few calls back and forth and some REAL desperation I finally got to talk to an EVGA Supervisor who was able to sort out the issue with Newegg. So, card is off for a refund now.

Dunno what I'm going to look for after this. Stat wise I'd probably just pick up the 960, but... after that whole thing? God knows.
