Well, it's not like the Marvel movies as of late haven't altered backstories... I mean they put The Punisher in TAMPA of all places.
They could easily make him an experimental soldier designed for the conflict in Afghanistan and is called back to the US by Sheild to stop Al Qaeda's devious new leader, The Red Skull. Okay sure, that's nearly the same thing they did to Iron Man, but if the American moviegoers will keep watching those incurably moronic "<blank> Movie" Movies.... Besides, everyone knows there's only ONE person who can play Captain America and it's Stephen Colbert.
