If I remember correctly, this is discussed in the scene between the emperor and Vayne, or at least it is hinted there. Emperor Gramis ordered him to kill his two older brothers who were plotting treason, although officially it was said that they both died in battle.

I thought it seemed more like his brothers were going to kill Vayne, due to some kind of sibling rivalry. At least that's how it seemed to me when they were discussing the death of his brothers as Gramis was asking Vayne why he was keeping Larsa alive/protecting him.
