Rule of Rose.
It bears some striking similarities to Capcom's Haunting Ground, as mentioned by Nikose, but with a few differences. The most obvious similarity is that the story is centered around a helpless young girl and her dog. The number one difference is that the game was developed by Atlus. So basically, yeah, it's pretty tough to find. Also, like Atlus's more typical RPG fare, it has a high level of polish without the big-dollar scrutiny of a company like Capcom, so the game is more artistic by miles than your typical RE or even Haunting Ground. The game is pretty difficult to describe adequately... it explores aspects of horror atypical to the more mainstream games in the genre. Things like the cruelty of children, humiliation, and the profundity of sadness. Basically, it explores the horror genre through the psychological lens rather than relying on the threat of physical violence; you won't jump with fright when chainsaw-bearing psychos pop out in Rule of Rose, it just doesn't happen. But when the fat girl the other kids reject and haze mercilessly comes to you for comfort and wants only to be your friend, and you recognize that associating with her could lead to abuse... It's unnerving on a level that zombies can just never attain.

Shaq Fu.
Ohhh Survival Horror. It's hard to think of any others that's not been included here bar Parasite Eve which freaking rocked. The first dino crisis had some moments to it especially the battles against Rex. The first Obscure game (being the only one I played) seems to have some real depth to it, it's just monstrously hard. It's also the only one of the genre I've seen with two player co-op play. Considering my buddy liked running ahead and wasting all the precious ammo, I'm not surprised we sucked. Has a very "The Faculty" feel to it. Forbidden Siren is an unusual take on the whole thing and really has the difficulty ramped up. It's like Metal Gear Unarmed With Things That Eat Your Face. I hear good things about Kuon but haven't played it. As an outside offering, Shadow of Memories. It's more of a suspense thing and it's definitely all about survival as you try to find out why someone keeps killing you every day. |
