I don't understand how this even makes sense so. If it's simply a matter of a band being indepedent then there is no unifying factor to like. Surely one can like individual bands but can't claim to like a genre which isn't related to the musical output.

I'm not quite sure what part/aspect of that statement you're refering to there. I'm merely saying that the conception that people who listen to indie are pretentious and elitist (only listening to indie) is 'silly', as I listen to both indie and 'mainstream' stuff.
