Maybe its just that all 4 light warriors love WM and act that way to please her? Because why would, after all that killing and slaughter they've done jump in to kill BM after he's killed WM. It's not like they truly have any more moral authority then BM, for all we know it could be just that they love her that much. The only one I really saw stepping in to save/avenge WM is fighter. RM kinda, but its not totally his style. Theif? Didn't really see that one, and being the second one to go after Fighter got it, that surprised me. So either what you say is true or they're all in love with WM.

I'm pretty sure it isn't DOUBLE irony, but you're right. It is ironic. I was wrong. Sorry. I generally assume that most uses of the word irony on the internet are mistaken uses because that's a pretty safe bet. People seem to be under the impression that because irony is funny, anything funny is ironic.

Also: although I do see your point, the very nature of English is such that - given the broad array of exceptions within our shared language - very few would ever understand such an error as you pointed out. Nonetheless, I'm glad you did! Now I can see it, though it took your clarification, because I wasn't seperating the sentence from its over-all meaning. When you (or rather, when I) stare at works translated from another language long enough, you (or rather, I) begin to lose the distinction between a part of the thought and the entirety of it, and it seeps into your (or rather, my) own writing. Nice catch!

To note: my "Also" note is neither meant with irony (which would be foolish) nor sarcasm (which, in retrospect, I could see being read into it, especially since I used it pretty heavily on the first parts). Seeing through different eyes indeed. Nifty.

That's funny. I remember when he was typing that I told him he shouldn't say that I was helping him edit it, because I was just commenting on one part and not checking over the entire thing for mistakes. I figured that inevitably there would be some mistake and I'd get blamed for it. (We English teachers can be paranoid about that. Yes, we teach English. No, we're not perfect. Get over it.) Grognor is correct that, when taken literally, the clause "As an English teacher" seems to modify the noun "I," not the noun "she" in the above sentence of doom. To correct it, one might say, "I figure that she, as an English teacher, is qualified." Or, one might avoid the topic entirely and instead invite everyone out for cookies. (Hey, Black Mage likes them. So do I.)

As for whether or not the situation is ironic, I leave that up to your judgement. It is true that irony is often misunderstood in our culture, with its rampant misuse in such venerable lyrics as the classic Alanis Morissette song. However, situational irony depends upon a contrast between what is expected to happen and what actually happens, so depending on what you were/are expecting, an awful lot of situations could potentially be classified as ironic.

For the record, verbal irony involves the use of a word or words to mean something other than their usual meaning. This includes both puns (using multiple meanings of a word at once) and sarcasm (excessive praise for the purpose of dispraise). Dramatic irony involves an audience or reader knowing something that a character in a play or story doesn't know.

Examples:

Situational Irony - We expect Black Mage to get hurt when he leans on the deathtrap's landing gear just before it takes off. The situation leads us to believe he will be burned in a jetstream of fire, or somesuch. He isn't. He's walks away fine and happy.

Verbal Irony - Thief tries setting the dragon on fire. It doesn't work. Red Mage says, "Any more bright ideas?" This is both a pun and sarcasm. It's a pun because he is calling the idea bright, as in smart, and bright, as in glowing on fire. It is sarcasm because, although he is seemingly praising the idea by calling it bright, as in smart, he actually means and suggests that Thief is dumber than dirt.
