Is it just taking forever to load, or does it take forever for everything..?
Man, I leave all kinds of things on with games running. And I still have a single-core machine (2.4 GHz AMD; still enough for anything out there but not a powerhouse by any means relative to current CPUs). Donomni, what games are you running and what are the specs of your card? Chances are good your video card is terribad and forcing the system to compensate or you're running things (graphics detail, shadows, viewing distance, aa, etc.) too high for your specs. I mean, as much as Firefox enjoys gorging itself on RAM I can still leave it (and media players, and e-mail, and IM clients, etc.) on and game no problem.
Hell, I am in Guild Wars right now as I type this, listening to music, and switching between virtual desktop screens to check my e-mail (and because I can for giggles now that I am reading this thread again). Sure, I have 4 GB of RAM to help with that, but I was doing it when I still only had 2 as well. Aero: That's a lot of waiting around. What the Christ. Five minutes? Once it does load, do you have slowdown in-game? What is your FPS in TF2? Does it stay consistent? Do you have stuttering? E: I mean these specs, save for possibly your video cards or the type of RAM (i.e. is it performance RAM or value? good timings?), don't seem too different from mine, and I run things at max settings all the time. I've never heard of not being able to multi-task, issues like long load times, etc. on that amount of hardware. I mean to have someone not able to run a browser while doing something else brings to mind a system running 512 GB RAM and like a mid-generation P4 or earlier. Maybe Aero should look into more RAM for starters, and D into a better video card... Though perhaps Nikose was right in suspecting the motherboard. Maybe it's pretty sub-par and part of the problem.

kind of, when it finally does start I get ALOT of lag, but it is temporary and does go away after about a minute or two.

Aero, it almost sounds like the problem is more in your hard drive. I get similar (Though much shorter duration) issues when my virus scan kicks in when I'm playing games; loading times go through the roof. 5 minutes, though, is as they say: what the fucking hell?!

As I'm understanding it, 5 minutes is the standard for him from before hand.
Also looking at what he's told us about his computer [*grumble* dxdiag woulda been easier *grumble*] really, that's not a TF2 machine. O_o |

From what I hear, Steam does a very good job of optimizing their games. So probably understandable.

Specs for my card are here.
For comparison based on games/programs running, I've had just Firefox and fucking Maple Story, of all things, and FF was pretty slow, with the game having some sort of 2-4 second lag. So I assume my card is horrible. :gonk: |

oh I never did mention, my CPU is a dual core. I didn't mention this originally as I thought that was what the d in the system specs stood for

...I didn't know the Pentium D was a dual-core. Can you do me a favor and run the DxDiag, then attach it here?
