One Piece hasn't been mentioned in awhile

And there is an ancient conspiracy, but only Robin is really pursuing info about it. Luffy's all about getting to Raftel (and reuniting with his crew at this point)

I somewhat lost interest when the core crew expanded beyond Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Usopp. They had a good team-of-five thing going and adding a talking reindeer seemed really stupid to me at the time.

Anyway, when I left Shanks was still the guy who set the bar for badassness. I liked a lot of the enemy priate crews up to that point too.

Anywho, I've been watching it on Hulu, got up into the part of the Alabasta arc where Luffy fights the boss man for the arc.

I have to say, this series is pretty awesome, what with avoiding some of the dumbest shonen tropes, like spending a million episodes training.

Shanks still is.

To give you an idea of how awesome Shanks is: the world of One Piece is considered to have several "great powers" one of these is the Navy as a whole. Another is the Shichibukai, and the third is the "four Emperors", four extremely powerful pirate captains and their crews.

Shanks is one of the four. Whitebeard is another.

He was a dumb concept.....even for a show based around the idea that certain people gain powers from eating magical fruit and mostly all become pirate captains disregarding the initial plot-point that eating said fruit removes one's ability to swim.

I think all the training is done either mid-fight or off screen. Eventually Luffy developes two new techniques and the first you see of it is when he uses them. I mean when you spend 90% of your life on a boat you dont have much else to do, and would be pretty boring to watch. So they just skip over that stuff.
