i started playing the first game, but stopped after a while. dungeon-crawling started feeling like a choir, because of the boring combat and utterly retarded leveldesign. i mean... zelda 1 has better dungeons.

.Hack is a top notch Dungeon crawler series, IMO. The only real downside was item spam. Once you could afford 99 of the most current healing item, you were invincible. It's very entertaining to go through without using many items though. Games' are decently hard (Unless you spam items), and had good characters.

It's not so bad for me since dungeon design was exactly as I pretty much expected. With so many areas, what did you expect? Still, it takes some really push to do more than maybe three large dungeons at a time before you doze off.
Also, while shops sell some good stuff, the best stuff you can get comes from the non-shop NPCs running and conversing around. Save your magic scrolls, your high-level but still unwanted weapons, and other things to trade with them for good items, and try to save those good items so you're well prepared for the bigger boss fights. |

yeah that's true you can't expect to make a differrent dungeon for the god-knows-how-many places you can go. also you get to see characters from .hack//SIGN. and Tsukasa, subaru, and sora are playable characters in the fourth volume.

After, not during. You have to beat them all first.

Let us not forget Helba in the player-after-game part there. The hacker is nifty picker-upper in combat.
