I've got a heavy courseload this semester, so I'm going to have to drop out, at least until I get on top of everything.

Just assume my character is following you guys around buffing and healing at the appropriate times.

He'll only attack if attacked first, because otherwise he loses the ability which allows him to lug around a large shield with no penalties.
