I'll be honest? Seeing Shadow the Hedgehog in Celes would probably manage to put me off of Final Fantasy, Sonic, fighting games, the colors green red and black, and porn all at the same time.
As for the current discussion, I don't have much to add probably because the only fighting game I even tried to take seriously was Brawl and yeah, Brawl... |

Here's the next page with a screenshot of another assist in the same battle where Cloud and Sephiroth are both beating up Terra. EDIT: No seriously, how on Earth did you come to the conclusion that the guy attacking her in the picture was her assist?

Oh, ok, I see it now. Seph was near Terra and pointing at Cloud so I assumed wrongly. Well in that case I have no idea what's going on then. It might be because Kefka is getting hit so Terra can't use him, hence the locked out bars? Won't really matter for shit if she can use him as soon as he stops getting hit though. If they do have their own health bar then perhaps it won't be total shit.

He's computer controlled, though, and he's out on the field, which means she's already using him as much as she possibly could. The only difference between the two players is that one's assist is getting hit and the other's isn't, and the one who's getting hit now has the assist bar locked out.
Logically, this suggests that you get your assist bar locked out for something related to your assist getting hit, which means there is a consequence for failure. Don't know how permanent that consequence is for the whole of the fight, but if you're equipping one of your characters that you've leveled up and geared, then that character would have a life bar, even if you couldn't see it. But yeah, it remains to be seen if that lifebar is involved as of yet. EDIT: Got some Lightning gameplay for y'all. A bit hard to see, though, since our pal with the camera appears to have no concept of zoom.

Why would they not show that life bar though? Surely that's fairly important if assists do have their own life bar. If they don't show the life bar then that's frankly silly. This is, of course, if assists do have one in the first place. It could just be that they have a cooldown after being used, and the bar is shown as locked out during this cooldown. Obviously, getting hit would interrupt the assist and send it straight to cooldown. That's my best guess for now.

Well, if it is a cooldown period, that's not so bad, either. I really couldn't tell you because the only video I've seen so far where anyone bothered to use an assist was the Lightning vid I just posted, and I can't tell one way or the other how it works because the guy playing it has his big fat stupid head in the way of his gauges.
EDIT: Okay, the second time he uses them I can see the assist bars just fine, and it doesn't appear to be a cooldown period, either.

If it's a cooldown period, and a substantial cooldown at that, then it might be less shit than I thought. Still doesn't approach good, though. No way.

I take solace in the fact that you're probably not going to like the game regardless of what they do so who cares?

That's cool, go right ahead. I'll probably end up playing it anyhow, and complaining about it.
