What is currently used in 3D films and I guess tv now, has been around for at least 10 years. In terms of new technology or the advancement of current technology, it's old and I personally find it doesn't add anything to the movies that use it and in most cases detracts. Is it better than red and blue filters? Sure. Does it do anything significantly different than that aside from looking slightly better? Not really. That said, a lot of people seem to be enjoying it so I might be undervaluing it by thinking it's just a fad.
