Yeah, not sure I can really get behind the Holocaust Denier theory. I mean, ok Holocaust Deniers are stupid on the basis that the deny the holocaust and all. That's a given.

However, it'd take a super special kind of stupid to think that people are going to forget six million dead Jewish men, women, and children just because someone steals a couple of signs.

The scrap metal thieves or rebellious teen theories both seem a lot more reasonable.

So, apparently the gate's been found; the police arrested 5 people between the ages of 25 and 39. The gate was broken into 3 pieces when found.

As an aside, the sign was always translated as "Freedom Through Work" from what I remember having read, was that just someone taking artistic liberty when they wrote it that way, someone making an allusion to the real sign, or can it be translated in different ways, since that does have fairly the same meaning as "Work Sets You Free"?

You guys have overlooked that maybe they thought they could it hostage. It would be kind of like when those guys tried to hold Lincoln's body hostage except in this case the thing being held ransom is not the nation's pride but the nation's curse.

There's always more than one way to translate things. Some are just more accurate than others because of the meaning they convey, rather than the literal meaning of the words.

Also, if they were holding it hostage, they would have sent some sort of note. Not doing so pretty much negates the reasoning, ne? Cutting it into three pieces doesn't help, either.

Because if I'm a scrap metal dealer there are far far far FAR easier things to steal than a guarded out of way historical relic which is old, rusty and not very big- thus not very profitable and going to be difficult to steal.
You could go out on the street and steal a car with less hassle and make far more profit out of it.
This is stupid.

The article does say that the thieves avoided surveillance with apparent care. The rest didn't seem to really speak against scrappers but that kind of make it sound like it was a hassle.

Even if it wasn't guarded by anyone and was just sitting in the middle of a field it still is not worth the time of the scrap metallers.
