I have an instrumental version of an album where I mentally add the vocals sometimes.

Its weird becuase they're there but they're not.

I found a book that said that fear was the most prominent of all emotions, or some such. Obviously the writer was a pussy.

I think it's natural to attribute stimuli to other stimuli or events. For example, when the leaves start to change color and I happen to be chewing on a beefy jerky steak thing at night I have a strong urge to play Breath of Fire 3. Also, when I fire up some No Use For A Name to listen to, I get the exact feeling of chatting in IRC circa 2002 for a few minutes.

The brain is all about filling in patterns, or so optical illusions would have you believe. Sometimes a pattern is just incomplete without another sense being involved.

Agreed. I think the "1 in 23" thing on the wiki is a little bit of a high estimate, if you take this into account. Clearly, there are some people who have actual, genuine synaesthesia, which is friggin' BADASS. The trick is to differentiate them from the people who see Two as Green because the 2nd Captain Underpants book had a green cover.
