73.20, that was how much my last full tank cost me a few days ago. It's almost 4 dollars/gallon in WA state for the good stuff(which I need to get decent gas mileage. I also have to get the really heavy duty motor oil) So I spent as much as 2 new video games on gas. That will last a single week. I spent 280 dollars a month on gas.... guh.

Actually what I find interesting is that the spike in prices here isn't even due to oil, the price of which is falling, but rather of the gasoline itself, due to a dearth of refining capacity. A cynical person might imagine this is by design / the result of a decade of mergers among the largest oil companies both to consolidate market share and vertically integrate their product pipelines.

To be frank, my own personal theory is that they're gouging us because they can. Oil retrieval rates and gasoline conversion capacity haven't gone down in the last 6 years, and demand hasn't been going up drastically. What has happened is that there has been a president with strong ties to the oil community in office backed with a sympathetic congress that is (was now, I guess) highly anti-investigation, especially of big business. Like a couple of years back when California was facing that energy "crisis."

Wow, I'm really starting to be happy about the fact I probably won't need to have my own car for a long time. These prices are just insane...

What really got me was when the leaders of the OPEC nations' (and other nations') mega-oil companies actually got together and had a meeting resolving that they would all work together and charge more than they should because it is going to eventually run out. See, it bothers me that I had to hear about it. Conspiring to stick it to us, and they couldn't even do it secretly? That makes it NOT a conspiracy, actually.

My family is breaking out the bikes this summer. Which is going to kill my brother, who wants to get driven anywhere out of a two block range. Plus, his ex-/dangling him girlfriend lives on the edge of town, while we're in a nice little suburb just behind a strip mall towards one of the borders of the tri-city area. He'll be losing a lot of excess pounds if he wants to see her. :p

Why should they bother hiding it? It's like telling some crack addict that he's going to be charged extra since their stock is about to run out, so they need to make the most money.

The whole time the addict is just going, "Fuck it, I whatever, just, you know, hook me up already!"

Except in this case the crack addict has most powerful army, navy, and airforce known to man and has enough crack for at least a one way trip to their front door. Yeah, they should keep that kind of shit secret from us.

I hope one of the cost-effective alternatives to gas becomes more readily available soon.
