Besides, insulting the kid wouldn't be enough... the one he got wasn't. I'm reminded of the old "sticks-and-stones" phrase in that instance, but with adults such as his mother, the phrase no longer believes words can't hurt. Now it's "Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but words will damage my inner child forever!"

What a bitch. And her fat kid. *snort* Personally, I think the world would be a whole lot better if mankind remembered two of life's most basic rules:

1: You don't screw with the guy who handles your food.
2: You don't screw with the guy who handles your medications.

Actually, RaiRai, from where I stand the man lost his livelihood for having performed assault on someone. He got what he deserved, rather than the kid getting his way.

Work retail for awhile. You'll understand exactly how violence inducing incredibly stupid behavior from people who KNOW you can't actually do anything to them is. People regularily abuse that knowledge, such as that fat kid. They goad you and poke at you all just to get a rise out of you, because they know in the end that no matter what happens they win. If you lash out at them they go crying back to mommy/daddy/your boss/their lawyer and if you don't they get their sick little joy out of ruining your day.

The only way to ruin their game is to hurt them enough to make it not fun for them anymore. Especially if you can do it without getting caught.

Even if it doesn't bother YOU specifically anymore, you have to realize they're going to find someone else that it does bother and they're going to do it to them. And then, after fucking that person over they're going to do it to someone else and someone else and someone else, all while snickering. SOMEONE has to put a foot down... preferably down their throat, and ruin it for them.

I'm pretty good at letting things roll off my shoulders. I'd say being personally insulted for doing my job here three times in full thread form and not banning anyone over it (I did warn ranger, but only because it was in the form of a straight out flame, and he put it in discussion as opposed to forum related), and more times than that trying to warn people away from eventual rule breaking (like a conversation that was headed toward subs vrs dubs) speaks pretty well for this. I'm the same way at work, too. I shrug off people that the other employees can't stand.

This doesn't mean I think that people should just be able to walk all over other people who are just trying to do their jobs. It also doesn't mean that I think people are lesser for sucumbing to normal human emotion when presented with a little asshole like that.

I think the problem of views here is that you, apparently, haven't run into people like that kid before, so you don't realize that they aren't doing it because they're angry or because they've been slighted. They're doing it specifically to piss people off and make their lives harder.

People whose only goal in life is to ruin other people's lives need to be corrected or locked up. It's the social equivalent of tearing a spider's legs off just to see how it handles the pain.

I knew there was someone who understood the service industry here somewhere. Whether in food, medications, whatever, there's always someone out there who isn't happy unless they're making themselves a complete pain in the ass for someone who's only trying to make a living. This is far from the run-of-the-mill questions a customer will use to get a better understanding of a product, or how a business would work. This is more of the "I'm unhappy with myself because I'm fat/lazy/ignorant/impotent/ranouttamidol/acompletetool/ect., so I'm gonna try and make myself happy by making someone else even more miserable than I am." People with this mentality need a good mushroomstamp right in between the eyebrows.

On an unrelated note, while spiders are hideous, repulsive, nasty little abominations of creation, if you're gonna kill one, do it in a humane fashion. I recommend a large, blunt object. Or use of a lightning-rod static electricity trick. The explosion is almost instantaneous, so they still feel nothing.

I don't really think it's a good idea for adults to lash out physically at minors, and I do think it's a good idea for this guy to find work where he won't be exposed to irritating little turd-beast children. But at the same time, I don't blame him for his reaction at all, and it's sad that this kid isn't going to learn thing one from it.

The way retail functions should be changed, I guess. Change what makes working as an ice cream vendor different from standing on the sidewalk, as far as being insulted is concerned. The customer-retailworker relation is the product of a commercial philosophy. "The customer is always right", was it?

He could have just taken his change elsewhere, but decided to be a jerk. The vendor didn't need to sit there and listen to his bullshit.

And the article also says that the vendor denies hitting the kid. So who's to say that he did? Maybe the kid just didn't get his way and decided to make the story bigger so the vendor would pay harder? Who knows.

The customer isn't always right. They may believe they have the right to say that, but if they're wrong, as a retail worker, you're allowed to put them in their place. I work with bitchy customers daily, thankfully I haven't hit one yet, but some of them damn well deserved a punch in the mouth to shut the hell up. I don't go to work to be abused. I go to work to earn money to live. And it's not making my life happy if people are calling me names or shouting at me about how life is unfair to them and it's all my fault.

They need to find something more productive to do rather than make our lives hell.

But he can't change that. The lowly ice cream man or floor clerk can't do anything about the commercial philosophy. Not even a single CEO can change it. It would take a near global movement, because the customer is always going to gravitate to the store that HAS the 'customer is always right' policy, given competitive prices. So, as long as one company keeps up that policy every company that attempts to drop it will lose sales and have trouble staying afloat.

So, really, expecting the commercial philosphy to change is just a beautiful dream.

This leaves only some way of teaching customers to treat retail workers better, and, for all our bitching, most customers are nice enough. There are just a few like that.

The perfect end to this case would have been that ice cream man suing the kid for harassment and winning, but that's not going to happen anytime soon, either...

So what options do you leave him? Just sit there and take it over and over again from fat little bastard after fat little bastard? It's perfectly understandable for him to eventually smack one around.

If the whole story is different then obviously what I'd think if it would be different. But obviously the court believes he did hit the kid. What is obvious though is that people here are cheering him for having hit the kid, so I guess they believe he did do it. If he didn't, I don't know what we're talking about here.

It's because you can't be Liberal AND a majority. The more people agree with you, the less your "Liberal Drive" is active, and vice versa. To remain Liberal you must disagree with the majority. Because so many people sympathize with the Ice Cream man, your Liberal Drive is working exceptionally hard, resulting in stress which causes you to be pissed off.

That, and because you don't understand the needs and concerns of the workers.
