I just recently moved out at 20. It's nice since I'm still in college. But working a full time job and doing classes kinda sucks. Thankfully every other quarter my parents take care of my room and board at the house I'm renting with a bunch of other people. Plus I'm on their (rather good) insurance and they take care of my car payment and other bills. So while I'm not independent, I'm at least on my own. And I think that's a good way to start.
As far as advice. Make a budget of how much you'll be spending on rent and food and wants. That way you know how much you need to keep up what you're doing or be able to look into where things might need changing.

Right after highschool when I was living in my parents basement I had my own phone line. Makes things simple. Also made it easy for my Mother to call and wake me up in the mornings for breakfast |

Yeah, home cooked meals like that would be the thing I miss most. Cooking for myself kinda sucks. It tastes fine, I'm glad to say, but it's so much more work than none.

It's true that some of the situations are different and whatnot but moving you should consider these things: 1) For the love of god, SAVE up before moving out. You'll be spending much more than you'd think. For starters, there's the apt deposit. Usually it's the same as the rent each month, but you gotta ask to make sure. Other bills, like phone, electric, etc., require deposits or usually cost more for the first few bills or so. 2) You can pick up those apt books you'd find in the grocery store or whatever, but the cheaper deals are usually found in the classified section of the paper. Of course, depending on where you live (bigger cities and whatnot cost more, blah blah) and what you can pay, cheap is relative. 3) Like previously mentioned, figure out what you can spend each month. Make sure it's not ALL you make, or that you can only barely cover it. (unless you have no other choice and whatnot, again situation-wise). Contact the apt peeps, view the place, and if you really like it sign the deal and snatch the apt as soon as you can. Even if you don't move in right away, lots of places putting down the deposit reserves it for a few weeks or so. I can't tell you how many times an apt was snatched away 'cause I was lazy and didn't pay up. 4) Small tiny note on roommates: They're a great way to split the rent, but make sure you can kinda get along with them. They're an easy way to ruin a place to live, no matter how cheap it is. It really depends on what you want in an apt, and the situation and whatnot...still, those things I learned through the nose. I wished I had known before I stumbled through those lessons. @@ Also, been living on my own since I was 19, and it's pretty awesome. =)

I'm 15, and I don't live at home most of the year, so I guess I beat everyone but Funka Genocide. Course, I'm completly financially dependant on them, and have no idea when that will change, but I'll probably get a place of my own during college.

I live on my own, but since I don't have a new job yet, I may have to stay with my mom and stepdad for a month or two. I don't want to do it, so I'm hoping that my income tax return is big enough so that I don't have to.
BMG/Melfice pretty much covered all of the big stuff to consider when one moves out of the house. I'm probably going to end up living with my sister and my best friend, or at least my best friend, and I can tolerate my sister, I love her children, and I know my best friend and I will be able to get along, so it's all good. Pay attention to BMG, for she knows of what she speaks. |

Also, make sure your land lords aren't seedy. I had a friend who signed a lease that the land lords didn't honor and they're still in a law suit for getting out of that lease.
