Archer and Armstrong vs. the World
|
The Secret of Monkey Island and its sequels hold such a place in my heart for making me smile, besides lots of other humorous games like Super Mario RPG and Grand Theft Auto.
Not one to make me smile, per se, but Metal Gear Solid 3 was just so moving. So I smile back on the time I've spent playing it.

Bully (Otherwise known as the game that nobody I know has played...): I had never really played any GTA games so I hadn't really been able to experience the free-form kind of gameplay, and this one opened my eyes. It had a great story too with who I can probably say with confidence right, just may be my most favorite villain. He was just so believably pyschotic that he seemed to carry the story when it got kinda down. It's too bad he didn't show up that much. Also, tons of memorable funny quotes from Bully too.

Swing You Sinners!

Hmmm...what to post without just seconding (or more like eighthing) Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6?
Oh, yes. EarthBound. It looks simple and a bit cutesy. And then you start playing it and you realize that you're navigating your characters around a compelling, well-fleshed-out world populated with weird, hilarious, slightly insane people and monsters, made all the stranger for their being part of a world recognizably like our own. Also, the Earthworm Jim games--at least the SNES ones and maybe the one for the Game Boy Color (which I never got to finish 'cos I think my cousin mighta taken it **grumble**). They pack almost illegal amounts of shooting-stuff-up fun into worlds designed with an expert's eye for the truly surreal.

Wow, Earthbound. How could I forget.
From the "Buba shka" confirmation noise when you enter your name, to the downright hilarious "Ness uses a Ruler! Now he can easily figure out the length of things!" or "Grumpy Old Man started complaining about today's youth! Ness' guts goes down by 6!", the game was just dynamite from start to finish. I wish you didn't start off at level 1 with every Goddamn new character you got though. Made getting Poo and Paula hard, since they died like every fucking second.

Oh, man, I can't believe these next few haven't been mentioned.
Viewtiful Joe: It's just fun. Beating the shit out of things in slow mo, then zooming in the do even more damage, then speeding up to run away from some environmental hazard... It was so AWESOME. Okami: Ok, so I'm just naming Clover games... BUT, this one was just amazing. The celestial brush has to be one of the most creative things I've seen, and it's integrated into the game flawlessly. Not to mention the graphics. So pretty... Metroid Prime(s): I just love it too much NOT to mention it. Just one of those "Wow..." things the first time you play it. Perfect atmosphere in these games, really. Prince of Persia: Two Thrones was mentioned, but Sands of Time deserves a LOT of mention as well. Just so much fun to run around on walls and then firgure out a puzzle at the same time. As for a few that I'll second... DMC3: Oh yeah. I'm not one to spend much time on action games, but I have about 50+ hours in this thing. Seriously, I got EVERYTHING in terms of gameplay, I just need to beat it on Dante Must Die and Heaven or Hell. Shadow: How could I NOT mention this? It's just so epic and beautiful... GoW: Not quite on the level of DMC for me, but it's still awesome. |

I'll do something a bit different now. I'll mention free games.
Cave-Story: The game was incredibly fun, and when I finally finished the secret stage, I had a huge grin on my face. The Way: I simply loved this game, the game play was fun, and the plot was better then anything I had seen in a game (perhaps even in books), and the music amplified the mood of the game. This game is gold.

I should add that I liked FF9. Seeing all the little homages to past Square Games made me smile. I don't give a rats ass if people disagree with me. FF9 is a fun game.
GTA: San Andreas. You have sandbox games, then you have San Andreas. Just, standing on the outskirts of Los Santos and seeing the vast landscape is pretty sweet. |

Super Mario World: Nostalgia...yeah that's good but let me take a look to the basic love I have for this game. From the first real expansion from the normal fire flower and mushroom choice for power ups. Ability to replay levels. The Yoshi branching thing (I loved blue the most cause flight is flight) it gave me a good deal to remember when I got around to it. Also one of the first games I actually worked at getting 100% completion on.
Banjo and Kazooie: I am not sure why this makes me smile for reasons beyond nostalgia. But it was just one of those games I could say I always liked. I think my first real basic platformer as well. A nice day for gaming it was. Final Fantasy Tactics: I got this game early. The original disk still works and I just love looking constantly at how much better I get at it over time. I still right now am having trouble not just restarting the game and seeing if I can do better...which I admit I have done A LOT over the years. Just has never gotten old to me. Twisted Metal: How odd to remember this. I mean I had a demolition derby game once...then I got this and said, "Things do get better with guns!" I hear a new one is being made and I am hoping this time it takes place in the original universe unlike black and anything beyond 2. Much love also to the ending bits for beating it with every character. Manhunt: This making me smile may be a bad thing but it certainly reiterated my carnage ritual and also accelerated my heartbeat on more than one occasion. I mean seriously what is gonna scare me more than having no weapons in a small labyrinth of a level with a man who thinks he is a pig with a chainsaw? I guarantee you nothing has made me as nervous as that. And yes as strange as it gets that made me smile. LoK: Storyline. Adventure. Double existence. World spanning. Time challenging. Fate questioning. Mania. Legacy of Kain. Eternal Darkness: INSANITY. Dear god I cannot even begin to understand how awkward I got playing that game. Watch as it says your controller is out and a swarm of zombies mutilate you. Watch as it says your memory card has failed and erased all my progress from the game. Watch as your head falls off and begins to recite Hamlet! And I am still hoping for a sequel. More when they come to mind.

TES IV: Oblivion -- Equally completable with hack 'n' slashing, Sam Fisher stealthy assassinating, and spell-slinging.
Stubbs the Zombie -- I realize that this game is only twelve levels long, but for some reason, I can keep playing them over and over again. Killing and turning an entire group of humans into zombies is extremely satisfying. Zombie Master -- The only thing more fun than tossing an explosive barrel into a group of zombies and exploding it (and them) is chasing a human straight into an ambush of hulking zombies. |

Metal Saga.
I looked at this game for a long time until I finally bought it. What finally got me to buy it? Tanks. You get to use tanks in battle. And the fact that, if you were really bored, you could just speed up battles helps it a great deal - there are only so many times you'll care for certain animations, after all. Then there's Megaman Legends 2. I got it on Wednesday. It's old, but having played the first one I had high hopes for it. I wasn't disappointed - and now that I have infinite homing missiles I just can't help but run around blowing things up; I'm like that, you know. |
