Voltron!
Because everyone knows that the past was spotless and perfect, and because nothing can suppress the waves of retro euphoria that overtake me when watching Voltron. |

Code Geass isn't a mecha anime folks.
RahXehPhonaflj;algh;lahg;alj; isn't a mecha anime folks. Eureka Seven isn't a mecha anime folks. Gunbuster isn't a mecha anime folks. FLCL isn't...okay I'm just pulling stuff outta my arse here. The point is that we already know Eva isn't a traditional mecha anime. So? It has big robots. Just that puts it in the mecha genre. There's a reason every single big robot anime after 1995 has been influenced by it in some degree. Seriously, "mecha" is a genre so big it's difficult to tell just what exactly comprises it. If you don't want to include Evangelion then please exclude Gundam and Macross because they're talky talky and not smashy smashy like Mazinger Z or Gao Gai Gar. You almost had me there. Meh, might as well.
Geass R2 to run on [AS] immediately after Code Geass's first season. Gotta give them and Bandai credit for being really quick on this. |

So I watched a bunch of Gurren Lagann. Probably spelled it wrong, don't care.
It's pretty good; it does some of the things that annoy me in animes but it actually does a really good job avoiding a lot more things that annoy me in animes. I do kind of wish Drillsy would develop some kind of actual ability past "I'm really fnuckin nangry so my robot grows a bigger drill". On the one hand it's totally annoying that they killed the best character on the show, on the other hand it was really gutsy and I totally didn't see that coming. I like that Drillsy is kind of a douche but one that actively makes an effort to not be. I wonder if they're ever gonna have him and Gunsy McFanservice have the so my rampaging preteen weasel-lust killed the man you love talk. I do like that they let the huge-racked fanservice character be actually competent and smart, even in ways that are occasionally relevant to the plot. I would like for somebody to tell me they murder Princess Goddamn Darlingpants. I enjoy the 'aircraft carrier with feet' approach to Mecha and assume they only get more stupidly huge from there. Also Emperor Fnuckingevil is delightfully fuckingevil. I mean come on. "I clone daughters for my own immortal immusement, then pack them into boxes and throw them in a ditch when they get boring"? That's good evil, right there. I'm 13 episodes in so we'll see how the remaining 14 go.

You can skip episode sixteen if you want. It's a recap and it doesn't really contribute anything to the series besides some awesome artwork that doesn't show up until the ending.
I actually thought you would have been more over the fence about liking it because of all the hype surrounding the show. I'm actually relieved you're enjoying it. Quote:

If we did I wouldn't let you use it because that's exactly the kind of mad emote that a fan of Princess Darlingpants deserves.
I really think Bro is probably my favorite anime protagonist ever; I found him to be surprisingly complex in that a lot of what might come off as stupidity and egotism ends up being a sort of bottomless faith in the people around him (particularly, the kind of bottomless faith where he does not go around actually saying every five minutes "I know I will succeed because of THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP") and actual wisdom in the way of understanding that most times running away from a problem isn't actually going to make you any safer. I like that he actually and deliberately counts on the people around him and pushes them to be better instead of just himself, which are features depressingly missing from your standard Anime Badass. Which made it kind of a shame when they killed him not even halfway through the series but again - gutsy!

I marathon-watched the entire TTGL series last week. I have to say it's probably the best mecha anime I've ever seen. Out of curiousity; did anyone else notice all the little parodies/homages to other mecha anime? Some are really obvious (I kept expecting Rossiu to whip out the super-kung fu, or marry a redhead), but some are a bit subtler.
Fifth; I think you'll enjoy the second half of the series. I won't say anything else on the matter except this: They murder Princess Goddamn Darlingpants. As far as Macross is concerned.... The only one I ever particularly liked was Macross Plus. I tried to watch Macross 7, and it was just godawful.
