A Machine wouldn't be able to feel those emotions, though. Only be aware of them. Mimic them.

They don't have the proper glands, same for ghosts and skeletons.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but compassion and remorse tend to act as catalysts for positive actions. Fear can go either way, depending on the situation, but I'd hazard that it's better to have it there for the limiting it does do in both the immediate situation and long-term consequences. Would you rather have a robot who might freeze up in a hostage situation like a normal human, yet doesn't do crazy and harmful things because of fear of the consequences, or one that can act immediately to diffuse a crisis, yet goes around messing shit up because it just doesn't care what happens when the authorities catch up to it?

Well, given that all it takes is a simple

PHP Code:
if (scary_shit)
{

ai.feel_fear();

where "scary_shit" is a Boolean value based on a set of conditions as experienced by various receptors to external stimuli, it really isn't all that hard. The result might look something like

PHP Code:
function feel_fear()
{

ai.memory.burstmode true;

ai.parasympathetic_responses.disable();

Looking at it this way, why should an artificial being need all sorts of chemical hormones when those are simply ways to send certain electrical impulses and can therefore be bypassed? If you can simulate the same pathways, what's the difference?

I'm gone from here for good. This place gave me many memories to take with me and shaped me greatly. I still care about you guys. I just can't stay.

What about that whole deal with emotions possibly being an intrinsic part of sentience/reacting to your environment, etc?

Seems like a valid theory.

The 18th century wants its science back. Emotions arise from neurons firing there is specific neural activity that precedes and occurs concurrently with the experience of emotions. Its generally different for each emotions. They can effect and be effected by hormones but emotions themselves are generated by the wiring in your head.

For exactly the same reasons we feel emotions. There are people with certain types of brain damage that no longer feel emotion. They find it nearly impossible to make decisions. As far as we can tell its functionally impossible to make a realistic complex decision on logic alone. You need emotion to make an AI able to make effective quick decisions.

We won't actually be programming any AI. We'll be programing about enough to get it to learn well and that's about it. Emotions or something like our emotions will probably evolve relatively on their own as a part of reaching self awareness. They might need some slight push but any true AI is going to need them to be functional.

My post wants its vague, humorous refrence back, please. It says you passed it about a mile back.

I think I might have left it in my other pants with my posts vague, humorous reference. Aside from that small section of the beginning of my post the rest was more of a generic rant because I've actually seen that argument put forward before as a serious reason why machines can't feel. That and its all over fiction to the point where people just accept it must be true that machine can't feel cause they don't have hormones.

Yes, I am sure in 2018, when Science has finally completed its evil goal of creating a virtual brain, this simulated rat will rule over us like the god it is.

It's a rat brain.

It takes a supercomputer to model it because they're doing a pretty detailed simulation of each neuron making up its brain and there's a hojillion of them.

But this does not stop it being a rat brain.

Rat, do you think love can bloom even in the laboratory?
