I think Avatar opened the door to the future of movies. The future looks like this:
We get theater movies, huge visual spectacles (3D spectacles may be optional) that take advantage of the size of the screen, the volume, the sound system, in clever cases even the background noise and the fact that you're likely to see the movie only once and not freeze frame or rewind. On the other hand we get made for home video movies, probably maintaining the level of production value expected of movies today, but made to be watched in the comfort of home: Longer, more in-depth, taking advantage of the spacious BR discs. Possibly they'll even forego the lowest common denominator and try to make movies particularly interesting to a narrow demographic, although I can't think of a compelling reason for that to happen. Maybe people just have more time to watch different movies at home than they do in theaters. I know I spend a lot more time home. . . Anyway, we'll go to the theaters to give our eyes orgasms and satisfy the reptile brain, and take home movies with deeper meaning that encourage thought. Of course 90% of everything will still be crap, but I'm hopeful. On topic, well, one thing about the theater movies is that there won't be a lot to say about them. Just like this one.

Yeah, but even more so!
Actually the past is completely lacking big-budget movies made for DVD. I'm hoping this market gap will be filled as people figure out what kinds of movies actually benefit artistically from being played on the big screen and what doesn't.

People truly enjoy leaving their brains at home, I guess.
@Fifth: Indeed.
3D was going to happen to everything, and was already, regardless of how many

3D will become a big deal for a little while, then go away for a little while, back and forth for quite some time, I expect.

yea but they tried the 3D thing a few times over the decades, not like its new technology. I dont think things have changed enough that 3D will catch on now because its basically the same thing

Basically, it's like those 3D novelty cards and such with the rough surface. Otherwise, the standard seems to be needing electronic glasses that sync up with the refresh rate of the TV and alternate blacking out the vision in each eye in time with the TV displaying the image that that eye is supposed to see.
