If the motherboard is dead... how old is the PC? Is it worth replacing an older pair of parts, or just getting a whole new Rig?
Also, rather than dicking around with "did the mobo or the CPU die?" I tend to just grab a package deal of both myself. I know there's ways to tell, but they're not something I know. |

Sadly, replacement parts aren't an option and a replacement rig is a dream. If I can't fix it as it stands currently, I'm SOL. The computer is 6 years old and hasn't had any upgrades except a gfx card from 2008 so yeah, a new computer would make the most sense, as fixing/replacing/upgrading one thing is bound to lead to something else breaking after a short while, but it's not an option.
I still have my old PSU around, and it was working fine in itself when I removed it, the problem was the fan wasn't spinning. I'm going to try running the mobo off the old PSU to see if that is the issue (since even with nothing else plugged in it should still POST to tell me there isn't anything else plugged in) and if there's still no beeps, I'll take out the gfx card entirely to see if I can at least get some error output from the on-board card. If it's neither of those things then whatever else it is, it's something I don't have the ability to fix anyway. |

I have a motherboard and processor sitting around somewhere that I probably wouldn't be depressed to shove along. It's nothing spectacular, but it runs. If you're still without PC, this may be a thing?

Y'bunch of jerks
Yeah, Nik and the crew have kitted me out with pretty much an entire new system, save the PSU and the case which I can recycle from this one. Thanks for the offer though, Shiney! You guys around here are just ridic generous, especially to an is-around-quite-a-lot-but-mostly-lurks-really kind like me. |

I do not take sex in payment/bribe for things. And as Midgi is involved I feel the need to strike you to defend her honour.

Ahem
Steering the conversation away from my personal interactions with those involved They've bought me everything except a new PSU, so if I'm still getting the same problem at least we know it was the PSU (or... the tower case?) that was the issue. |

For those interested in the progress of this, I finally completed the build yesterday and am currently tying this on my swanky new desktop There's still work to do, but on the hardware side everything seems sound. Thanks again to everyone who chipped in with some ideas of how to fix the old machine in the first place
I ended up getting a new PSU and case anyway, so all that remains is the DVDR and HDD from the old PC. At least we know it wasn't one of those that was the problem! |
