What was the quote? Something like "A politician can talk for hours without saying anything"

I didn't see the debate, but I came across this transcript which I'm assuming is 100% accurate.

That's actually more accurate than what was actually said.

I shudder to think what 2020 will bring, especially since the Republican party doesn't seem to do "hindsight" very well.

I did have a thought. Even the republican's dislike Trump, do you think he'd get impeached? I mean they hate pulling that card, and good reason you don't want your population to think their vote was just veto'd. But still
Now I normally don't share things like this but someone shared this article and Mike Rowe has a good insight on a big issue. That being, the issue isn't lack of people voting, its lack of informed voting. Anyone can vote no matter how misinformed, prejudice, or downright insane they are. That leads to some problems, like global warming

While I don't disagree that uninformed voting is an issue, Mr. Rowe does seem to gloss over just how mindbogglingly complicated being a truly informed voter in this day and age can be. It's really not as easy as blocking out a few hours a week to study economics, US history, and having well intentioned debates that help form your worldview.....especially with how little time people have these days as it is. There are figuratively thousands of policy decisions that make up the fabric of America that change from year to year. You can't expect people to keep track of all of them, or even the few hundred that may or may not coincide with their interests as well as keep a balanced view beyond the scope of their own needs....and on top of all that, be vigilant and source-check all of their information to make sure they aren't building their knowledge-base on outright lies.
In short: being a well-informed voter is nearly impossible. At best you can hope people at least have a skimmed grasp at the issues of the day. And even then, hope that cultural wisdom of the herd percolates up the right choices every now and again. |

Unpopular Opinion: Democracies aren't great because average voters should have no say whatsoever in a nation's economic and foreign policies and mob mentalities lead to terrible decisions.
Autocracies are terrible, too, don't get me wrong. I don't think we've really unpacked an ideal form of government yet, but in idealizing the Founding Fathers we've prevented ourselves from innovating in America (and by dominating the world we're indirectly forcing most foreign governments to adhere to iterations on American principles.) Ideally we'll eventually reach a point where neutral, unbiased Artificial Intelligence ensures meritocratic appointments to all government positions.
