So what was supposed to be so great about these games again?

...After writing that wall, I'm honestly not so sure anymore.
...The characters? I remember having liked the characters. When they weren't acting like gigantic assholes.

Remember the P4 commission I did?
I remember when Snake flipped out because I bought/played FFXII instead of Persona 4 (both of which were recommended highly by Liz, ironically, who said the only reason I may dislike Persona 4 is because it was so extremely Jpop). But that was years ago. Oh, how times have changed...

I played the Dragon's Dogma Demo and wasn't too impressed by it, but it was just the demo, so I dunno. Demos can sometimes be pretty crappy.
The next game I'm kind of looking forward too is SFxT once the DLC comes out. I wanna play as Sakura and Elena. Aside from that, I haven't looked into new games. I've got too many old games I want to wrap up. Anywho, sorry for the minor derailment.

See, that's the thing with Atlus games. They come with this big, promising plot that goes into areas not often seen in video games, with a variety of characters who have a lot of interesting personalities and traits. They cover topics rarely seen in video games, about morality, free will vs. ignorance, about the nature of human relationships. I still count Persona 4 as one of my favorite games, as a matter of fact, because the main story line is so goddamn interesting--it's when you get subplots like that where you put your head in your hands and mourn your loss of respect for the writers. They do a lot of other things right, but just screw things up so badly in others.
Catherine, too, is a game I really want to like, because the nature of human relationships, of monogamy vs. free love, are brilliant concepts to try and give a deep exploration to through a video game, something you almost never see explored. As an asexual, aromantic woman, I am thrilled at any opportunity to see new and refreshing takes on how relationships are shown in media. But then everything got stupid and sexist, and I'd like to go into detail but it's almost 4 AM and my brain is dead so maybe later but the point is, I want to respect Catherine simply for trying to make that special effort: for going where other games have never even considered treading. But they didn't do it well. And that just makes me sad. Basically, Atlus has some great concepts and great character designs, that all become awkward and painful and annoying when given any real thought outside of a specific mindset. I want to like them. I was even reluctant to agree with Liz, when this thread first went up. But I can't deny that they are just no good in this field. |

...And in fact, as I became increasingly progressive, I actually identified Persona 4 and its characters as a major influence that contributed to my political transformation. ...And basically, over the last few years, I've become so progressive that P4 has drifted ever rightwards. It was once a shining beacon of liberal ideals; now I'm so far to its left that those ideals look quaint and hopelessly outdated. ...So now I have a regressive game to thank for my progressivism? I'm not even sure, anymore. All I know is that there was a time when Liz and I and most others here absolutely loved the crap out of Persona 4, and now that love feels so inappropriate and unearned. That being said I still love that commission you drew for me. (I still love most of Persona 4's characters too, even though I probably shouldn't.) (But the Franny commissions will always be better.)

Also, I was actually gonna look into the persona series on the basis of your guys' recommendations. Now that these recommendations have been summarily withdrawn, I see no reason to give my money to transphobic jerks. |

Final Fantasy? Dragon Dogma? Fuck alliteration and fuck Persona too. Just play Monster Girl Quest all day every day.
