I'm not saying it has to be a NPF rule. Listing roles is common and something people never do here. Games here started pretty power heavy and no role listing. It's mostly how mafia has been raised on NPF, but some prefer the more basic.

It's kind of tough in some cases because I can imagine a lot of scenarios where half the fun is trying to figure out what's going on; Bookworm's free-for-all might have been fun with some hefty modifications, for example, because everyone is a self-serving bastard at first. Nik's 3-way powerfest might have been cool if you took out most of the powers, too, and just gave each group a very minor specialization - everyone goes into mafia assuming default rules, and the discovery that they have multiple opponents ALSO competing would have been a game changer.
I think when I GM in the future I'll give some hint as to what's unusual (if anything) about the game I'm running during signup, but I like the sense of discovery. Using very descriptive flavor text can also be useful in themed games to let players make educated guesses. Mafia seems to be kind of like a weird variety of puzzle-poker, where knowing your opponents is more important than having the best powers, but you still have to use lots of logic to figure out what's going on. I plan to keep the puzzle aspect going whenever I can.

Yeah, for mine I'm planning on writing a fairly long RP-type post that'll give hints on what to look for and types of roles. I certainly wouldn't want to post all the actual roles in the game - I believe it removes half of the purpose of some roles that are meant to employ subterfuge. I WILL list factions, though. It's not fun to flail about wondering if there's a cult or not.
On another note, has Moogle decided on his theme for a Mafia yet?

I've been kicking around some ideas since I expressed interest in running one, but still haven't settled down for an exact theme yet. I will have it done by this weekend though and I'll let you know for sure then.

Well, for mine, I did plan on employing cult. Which I know is a bad subject with some people. Though I'll probably rule it that cult can't turn mafia players, but in the proceeding post, I'd word it so that it seems more like they were BG'd as not to give mafia away.
Also, traitor roles seem pretty useless to me. Instead of having fun, it seems to sow more paranoia and while that's what Mafia is all about, not the fun kind. Not to mention that it probably wouldn't make sense in my theme. |

Traitors are a neat idea, but there's no possible way to prepare for it. You can't work under the assumption that everyone is a traitor.
I mean, I was just talking about having roles nobody knows about, and that sounds similar. But at least there, you can at least make predictions based on past events; a traitor only reveals themselves once they've made their move, and they're likely to be gone immediately afterward. I'm sure there's a way to make it interesting and fun for everybody, but I can't think of one yet, and I don't feel like trying it any time soon.

I would just like to say, my 40k idea will mostly be in the style of Fenris' MLP mafia, which is the most fun one I've played so far, though I will try to balance it slightly so town isn't quiet as over powered. Don't want to say too much more, other than yes, there will be cult, which I know some people don't like, but I personally don't have a problem with.
The only thing I'm not sure whether to include is giving out alignments of night killed players. I personally prefered not being told when I was town, because it was more fun to work it out, and so long as the game is fairly normal, it shouldn't be too confusing. If people feel strongly opposed though I may open a vote on that during signups or something.
