But I did check out your tumblr Liz and....you didn't really sway me, but I am not buying Atlus games anyway anytime soon so you can go ahead and count me in as "supporter" I guess.

What gets me is that it seems both your supporters and haters on tumblr are big stuck up snobby jerks. I think you may need to look at that, maybe tumblr is the wrong place to do this?

(also I find it funny that it seems the thing people have problems with is not your main arguments, it is because you called out Funky Student. How dare you diss the Riddle Masta!!!)

No, I don't believe Naoto actually wants to be a man any more than she's influenced by media that, if she wants to be a hero/cop/detective she has to be a man. I don't see you making social commentary on how Mulan actually wanted to be a dude and yet it's the same thing.

The result is a strange mix of trying to show how media influences people and, ironically, of the game itself being sexist with the outfits and some of the interactions between characters.

Yo, just... so you know, and to get this out here in the thread's discourse in general, being trans isn't "wanting" to be a different gender. It is already being that gender, running contrary to externally assigned gender.

well, it is kind of ironic to call atlus racist for making Funky Student a "racial stereotype" when he doesn't actually appear to be african at all, skincolor-wise.

and, you know, the very site you got that image from has another of him standing next to the main character, who has nearly the exact same skin tone.

I was going to say something like, "Funky Student is black because he has an afro" but since that was originally part of the evidence for why it was a racist stereotype to have a black dude with an afro I'm just going to fall back on, "Look dude I"m pretty sure Funky Student is supposed to be black even if they sucked at portraying a black dude, if you want to make an argument about why his behavior isn't racist then go ahead and do that but let's just quit arguing this point because it is silly to say he's not supposed to be black when he's supposed to be black, it is self-evident like the Declaration of Independence and such."

except that:

a) if they had the time to model him an afro, they certainly had the time to give him darker skin than the rest of the thoroughly japanese cast;

b) characters that are obviously of Japanese ethnicity but have afros and act like over-the-top blaxploitation characters is kind of a regularly reocurring thing in Japanese humor, see Nabeshin et al.

you may want to be careful about saying a character is "obviously black" when the work comes from a country with very few people of african descent and the character fits a different humor archetype, especially if you have to invoke Selective Laziness.

no, this is blackface. What I'm talking about are people like the aforementioned Nabeshin or that dude from Durarara that keeps getting fucked over on account of being stupid or a significant number of side characters in cowboy bebop.

see you're doing this thing where you assume that your cultural values are reflected in the works of other cultures, and you think that something that has the same general outline as a racist thing here is the same thing, when in truth its a different thing with this background behind it that you don't understand.

Even after I learned, grew up, and came to be on the right side of a lot of important issues, I was still angry, abrasive, and generally increased the amount of hate in the world, in pretty unacceptable ways. On the off chance that someone is taking a trip down memory lane looking through those old threads, I wanted to devote my signature to say directly to you, I'm sorry.
