Say the parasites grew with the main host, why for the resemblance between the two? And if the little guys were it's young, the scratching of the back was to dislodge them, much like shedding. Also, given the little guys were the offspring, the venom they carried probably was a defense/feeding mechanism: Disable your prey while making them easier to eat. Does Cloverfield have the same venom? Maybe, but we couldn't see so in part that Most of Hud's body was eaten away, so no buildup of gas/agent could occur.
On a side note, I felt like a jerk for dismissing all the residents of Tokyo every time Godzilla stepped on the scene. Cloverfield just put a magnifying glass on the usually ant-sized. I'm still shaken.

A theory I heard was that the little bastards were more of smaller predators hitching a ride on the larger monster to pick up anything too small for it to get.
Linked to this, a guy said they looked a bit spidery, and maybe this is why marlena exploded - the "Venom", like most arachnids, was actually digestive juice injected into her body by fangs. she exploded because her internal organs being digested caused a buildup of waste gas, and once the skin got weak enough all the pressure released at once. this would also explain the haz-mat suits - the stuff released when she burst wasn't going to infect others, but if it was digestive juices it could have really, really nasty effects on exposed skin. |

Anyways... Reason for exploding people?: Definitely some kind of venom. Considering that the doctors seemed to know what as going to happen, than that they set-up the isolation tent instead of running away and letting the soldiers handle it, seems to give proof that it wasn't a kind of birthing process, a-la Aliens. What do you think happened to the other helicopter?: I think it made it out. If I recall correctly, at the moment, the monster (which puts me in the "One Monster" camp...unless you count the "parasites" as monsters) was being worked over by bombers. I just came back from the movie, and I don't recall seeing the other helicopter go down...but its easy to miss things in this movie. And you know? The more I think about it, the less I'm convinced that the smaller creatures would be parasites. I mean, the things were dropping off of the creature awfully fast (when it's standing over Hud, it drops a bunch of them right then and there, with no visible action on the part of the larger monster). If the things were parasites, why would they jump off a large food source they are already attached to in favor of small, harder to catch food sources?

Guys, we clearly have an Amphibious mammal of Sea origin here. It had those sacks on hte side of it's head. It looked like those of Frogs. Plus the legs... just the FANGS that are throwing me off....
So think fishy... like those Fishes that go with Wales to get the scraps of food... I'm pretty sure that the "spider-thingies" are like Mutant Crabs or some sort (it had claws and fangs, plus, what other sea creatures have that type of legs?). They dont crave for blood, but they are certainly carnivorous. Their Venon probably should cause nausea (She felt dizzy) but maybe on humans, it could make their digestive acid to react and gas to acummulate, this combo could explain the explosion (more like a Pop of a baloon) and the bleeding. A Sudden Rupture of the belly. Now, yeah, after seeing it, it was ONE monster, that's for sure. The "funny" thing is, as i see it, is that the army was probably already in Manhantan when Rob's party started. Or at least arriving. |

Particularly to the thing from the sky that dropped down into it. My main problem was that the breathing sacs on the things head were never attacked... they kept trying to bomb/rocket it's legs, or it's back, which even with humans are the two toughest areas of the body. |

Ok, let me just point ou this.. the Thing can resist the shock of a Missile and Bombs... if the little things are parasites that feed on Blood, how would they feed of it? They are clearly not strong enough to Puncutre the creature... or else, the would shred every human apart in seconds...

Again, cloverfieldclues.com is an incredibly helpful site for providing clues.
The thing that fell in the water at the end of the movie is rumored to be a piece of a satellite that the Tagruato website reported falling into the ocean shortly before the movie came out. It's possible that's what disturbed Cloverfield. Also, if Cloverfield is indeed a deep-sea creature, they are known to withstand great amounts of heat and pressure, due to the physical conditions undersea, so missiles wouldn't be very effective. Dunno if that would have an effect on the parasites (and I firmly stand by the fact that they are parasites, not offspring.) |

During the exploding Marlena scene, right before it, I thought I saw a guy on a brancard (those medical stretchers on wheels?) with what looked like one of those "crabs" on him.
Of course, that went by so fast, I couldn't see it very well.
