I have one thing to say:
'Ouch'. Esspecially coming from someone who appears to have a Christopher Walkin Avatar. Here's a thought; Is it frusterating when many members of your own demograph prepetuates the steriotypes you fight against, or being somewhat 'seperated' in your own mind, is that immaterial to you?

Good question. I'd have to say I'm not really affected by people within my particular, whatever it is, who perpetuate a stereotype. Anyone with a grain of common sense would know to get to know me and judge me based on how I act, not how those similar to me act.

There's also a small group of Star Wars fanatics at my school. Their fanboyism greatly hurts those of us who strive to express our geekity as a hobby, rather than an obsession (They skip lunch to get on library computers and RP, even though those computers are reserved just for schoolwork.) In the end, though, their stupidity only changes what people think of us compy people, which really doesn't matter too much, but the biases perpetuated by a few have to be put up with the whole, and I'm already sick of having to put up with arrogant asses. But what can you do, eh?

I tell people all the time that I'm half Scotish / half British (which I am), and almost everyone immediately doesn't believe me because I don't have an accent, I don't have bad teeth, and I don't drool at the mention of Haggis. That, and I don't spell "color" with a 'u'. I'm more humored than offended, really. Silly people and thier generalizations and/or stereotypes.

I'm from the South. I have no accent. Well... perhaps I'll explain...
I have good pronunciation and ennunciation for someone from my area, good enough to make the locals think I'm from "up north." However, when I do go "north," People ask where I'm from , and I say, with a heavy sigh, "Virginia..." Which seems to confuse people, because Northern Virginians tend to be very well spoken and such... It's like Southwest Virginia (where I live) is the uncircumsized penis of the state and when people mention us to northern Virginians, they're all, "Goddammit... *sigh* Yeah, we share a state with them... -_-" It CAN be a good thing to be thought of as an imbecile when people hear your accent, though... For example... I was in New York, and my cab driver happened to be a racist. He heard me say my destination and smirked a bit, thinking he found someone to identify with. "What do you think of those people over there?" He said, motioning to a group of black guys doing their rap thing. (Sorry, I don't know ebonics. I'm so goddamn white, it's not even funny.) I respond with: "Weyall, Ah teel yew whut! Ah theenk thim culured fellers is tha nahcest people I buhlieve ah've ever meyat! Now shut your goddamn racist face and drive me to the Astoria, you goddamn, mother-fucking, incestuously gay imbecillic cocksucking rat bastard piece of SHIT!" Strings of obscenities are my specialty! :] Anyways, another good thing about the southern accent... The European ladies seem to like it. If I was the womanizing type/more socially adept I coulda had a few English and French girls in the sack. And about England... While they are America's buttmonkey, they're not quite as bad as here. From what I've seen, Londoners drive like assclowns, but hey. And yes, I know a bit about the whole accent thing in England. I also know that northern England is the equivalent of the Southern US and Southern England is the equivalent of the norther US. I dunno... I am a stereotypical southerner in that I know a lot about guns. I don't hunt though. Or own a gun. Or plan to join the military. I do have a dead-eye aim though. Gramps's old fashioned lessons paid off. o_O That's all though. I don't watch NASCAR, I don't watch "rasslin," I don't hunt, I read for entertainment, I'm agnostic, and I think more than the people I know. Oh, and for the record... There's a difference between Hillbillies and Rednecks. Hillbillies are nice, hospitibal, right-wing and conservative, but not to the point that they'll cuss out a person of color for being colored. Pretty charming, too. Rednecks are your Hatfield and McCoy types...racists, "Git awf mah prawpertee" types, the types who're ruled by fear and deny it, saying that people different than themselves should be eliminated, and the type who beat their children. Buncha' assholes, really.

Seriously though you guys, all scots have beards. If you're from Scotland and you don't have a beard, you're a god damn liar.
Even their women and babies have beards. They get facial hair before they get normal hair. Also they are dwarves.

I've also run into people on the 'net who believe Canada has snow year-round. The only place that has snow year-round is the antarctic; not even the most northerly island has snow year-round. Where I live, I get it about early or mid-December to late or mid-March. There's also a lot anti-americanism around here. I can understand people being anti-Bush, or anti death penalty, etc. but if they openly state they're anti-american and you ask why, they simply state that all americans are self-obsessed morons. And they refer to Rick Mercer's "Talking to Americans," as if it were a credible study. Even with that aside, when Canadians point at Americans they're partially pointing at themselves, so I laugh at them. |
