The problem I have with TTFAF, other than the fact that I cant stand hearing it; is I cant hit the hammer-ons in a row, requiring me to strum again, which of course means I need to move my hand back down.

I beat Culex without using those items as far as I remember... I don't think I'd beaten Smithy yet when I beat Culex. I think my team was Mario, Bowser, and Mallow.

Actually, I gave Ballos one more try yesterday, and... I managed to beat him. I just didn't take as much damage in the previous areas, so I had enough health to survive the boss fight. Thanks for all the advice and links and whatnot though.
My new challenge is to try and get back into the Pokemon battling scene. I remember I spent nearly half my freshman year of college studying movesets, stat orientation, individual Pokemon specializations as well as team coherency, and when I finally got around to making a team... it totally bombed. I was so crushed that I left the game for about a year, but now I'm back with a renewed passion and vigor! And I'm a little bit taller! So I'm gonna refine my old team, then get to work on two new teams I've drafted! Yeeaaaaaarrrgh! Hikikomori attack! It's not very effective... |

Anyways, I'm currently speedrunning Abyss. I'm trying to aim for a non-cutscene time of about 4-5 hrs. There was a specific time of madatory cutscen, which I'll subtract at the very end. Hopefully I'll meet it.

Also it isn't that beating Culex without Lazy Shell/Princess isn't difficult, it's just that it falls down to lots and lots of level grinding before going out to fight him. I'm not of the category that liked to grind levels in Lunar 2 until you stomped Zophar's evil undead ass at level 99, so that might be why I see it as a 'challenge.' EDIT: Man, I miss Lunar 2. That was a pretty great game.

Lol, I never went "grinding" in SMRPG, and I think I was level 30 by the time I got to Culex. I know I beat the Ax Rangers before I went back to beat him, but I did beat him.

Well, just to clarify, I used Mario-Bowser-Geno, and was at level 23 with each of them, which was just enough to scrape me past the final bosses. The tricky part was keeping Bowser alive since his magic defense is awful, and though I could bolster it with Geno Boost (unless that doesn't raise MDef, never really noticed) Culex has a habit of Shredding me every time I try it. Mario wasn't much use either since he wasn't using Lazy Shell so was dealing a pittance of damage. Once the crystals were gone I could more or less go all-out on Culex himself, but those crystals gave me a hard time.

And now for something completely different!
So I just started working for the chinese on mercs 2, going up against the allies, and it's starting to get tricky, mainly because the allies rate of fire for all of their weapons is about a half million rounds/rockets per minute. This is especially true of their apcs, which have miniguns and are more deadly than tanks when you're on foot. I decided to go after their HVTs first, killing several and capturing the later few for the extra large cash payouts. Some of them took many attempts. Then I did the first real mission. This too took several attempts. The mission was simple enough; there are 3 buildings, all of which must be levelled. There is a captive on the roof of one building, who must be saved, which means flying in, landing, killing his guards and then getting him into the chopper to fly away. There are 3 SAM sites preventing aerial assault; all must fall. These SAMs are uber deadly apcs, guarded by tanks and positioned near high rises that spawn infinite rocket troops. There are about 50 more troops, mounted gun emplacements and a couple of choppers circling the area as well and the area itself is in a No Entry zone, meaning as soon as you pass inside they all know you're there, unless you're disguised in an allied vehicle. You have 3 free rocket artillery strikes, but using them anywhere near here always means the destruction of the building your prisoner is on, so you can't use them. As you can imagine, it was a hard mission, but I managed it in the end. This is not the problem though; it's the next mission I'm worried about. Again there are 3 targets; a bridge, a base, and a skyscraper. All must be levelled. The city in which this takes place is crawling with troops and the bridge is some way from the base and I will encounter dozens of tanks, apcs and jeeps en route from one to the other. Their jeeps are often fitted with rapid fire grenade launchers. The bridge is guarded at one end (the end leading into the city where the other 2 targets are) by high powered recoiless rifles and machine guns. Then there's the base, which in itself is comprised of about 20 smaller targets within its walls. It is crawling with tanks, troop spawning buildings, RPG men, mounted guns, more jeeps, and there are manned patrol boats in the water nearby. An attack by sea is probably impossible. Attacking by air is also likely to result in a swift demise. It is possibly susceptible to airstrikes, so long as I don't end up with a convoy of other vehicles turning up and following me as I approach. Assuming all that goes well that just leaves the HQ skyscraper (I want to take down the HQ last, even if it's easier not to). The HQ shouldn't pose a problem; it's fairly close to the base and only requires a laser designated bomb to take down, so as long as reinforcments don't interrupt me it should be easy. All of this is based on my knowledge of the layout from previous visits, before I became their enemy, so who knows what extra defenses may exist now or for the sole purpose of this mission. Basically, judging by how long it took me to do that last mission, this next one (which looks even harder) is likely to be an extreme test of endurance. The only saving grace is that the enemy is not the allies, but a separate (but similar) faction, so their weapons aren't quite as good. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow. EDIT: Woo, so it turns out my worrying was for nothing, the mission was easy. Now I just have to decide who should win the war; the Allies or the Chinese.
