...Yeah. Derail and all that stuff. Oh, oh, topic! Why do all fantasy metal bands sound exactly the same? Edit: On the note of Slipknot: They used to be pretty cool. They weren't particularly metal metal, more like really fucking heavy nu-metal (e.g. linkin park on downtuned and screaming steroids). Then they went into more of a metal direction (which is when they were good [Wait and Bleed type era]), then Vol. 3 came out which was still okay but not great. Then their new shit is shit shit shit shit. What the fuck are they doing in the psychosocial solo? Playing on the goddamn 6th string? You gotta separate your frequencies man!

Wait, wait wait wait WAIT! They call it fantasy metal now? Oh, dammit.
Wasn't this called Power Metal a while ago? If that's the case they don't sound all the same. But I have to admit that fantasy-themed bands tend to sound very similar.

Give a listen to the album Out of Myself, and tell me what you think. EDIT: Also, Dream Theater are about as prog as Phil Collins is metal. Last edited by Nightshine; 12-30-2009 at 08:56 AM. |

On the note of Slipknot: I personally don't like them but can understand that other people do enjoy their music very much.
On the note of Manowar: I'm not what you would usually call a genre elitist prick but they are NOT Power Metal ('Cause they're Manowar, duh). And they don't suck completely. Unless Nightshine says so.

Awwww, Nightsy. I was mean and I'm so sorry. Please go
:'c, :'(, :(, :\, :|, :/, :), ;), :D, XD again. Using the letter "C" for smileys did never occur to me. But it's good, it makes my trademark smiley transitions better. On a note related to the actual topic: I checked out Nile now and quite liked them. I haven't had the time to listen to every single record or listen to any of them multiple times yet, but, so far, I like their latest release the most.

*shrug* Edit: DT has some prog elements but mostly they are just sort of math-y, not really prog-y. |

Dream Theater should honestly rename themselves Captain Bluebeard and the Cheese-Graters. They're an embarassment to progressive rock. |

Progressive metal (sometimes shortened to prog metal) is a subgenre of heavy metal, which blends the powerful, guitar-driven sound of metal with the complex compositional structures, odd time signatures, and intricate instrumental playing of progressive rock.
*Wikipedia Whenever I think of progressive music, I think of something that lacks structure entirely. You can't make a genre out of something that doesn't have a genre (i.e. something that is new and therefore cannot be classified), it has to have some defining elements. I don't really listen to DT but what I've heard has a fairly obvious structure, isn't necessarily in hugely strange time signatures (the most exposure I have is Panic Attack in RB2, its 5/8 which is pretty okay), but they do break away a little bit, and have the technical playing and they do play in non-normal modes (as far as normality in modes go)... Hence why I'm calling it math and not really prog. But even then... Mostly just typical power metal. From what I've heard. |

Yeah Dream Theater fits the definition of prog but they're music's pretty lame, mostly. I consider there to be two types of prog: the kind that's about masturbation with instruments and the kind that's about creating a more out-there, unconventional type of sound and I'd definitely consider myself more of a fan of the latter than the former. If you can't write interesting songs than all the technical skill in the world can't save you.
That said, I actually still really like the first DT album; it's full of shred and cheesy keyboards and stuff but they managed to keep a lid on things for the most part and actually had some solid songs. Plus it's got their old singer so if you hate James LaBrie (which is everyone on earth, including the other members of DT) you can still like it. |
