Although I have to say you guys forgot to add at least a few games in the Zelda history. They were:
The Faces of Evil The Wand of Gamelon Zelda's Adventure BS Zelda (Only in Japan) I have to say I think thats the storyline(cept BS) after LoZ for the NES. I'm not sure that that series fits in with the rest of the other games. For information on those games: Zelda Games |

They don't fit into the storyline because they are horrible bastards of gaming that make many scream "Blasphemy!" CD-I + Zelda = Evil.
As I recall, the cinema scenes in one were made entirely with microsoft paint, and were little better than those cartoons you'd see on the bible network. "I'm so hungry, I could eat a moblin!" That may not be a quote from the game, but it's along the same lines.

I've always considered Link/Zelda to be like Final Fantasy. Never the same story, but part of a series, but I like the set up you guys are mentioning, it does make sense.

"Link must have gotten the Triforce of Courage in the original Zelda game, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS NEVER MENTIONED!"
He collects pieces of the Triforce in the first game. I'm a bit hazy, but I'm not sure which piece. However, since Ganon has Power, and Link collects Wisdom in the second game, I think it's safe to assume that Link forges the Triforce of Courage. "And if you ingnore the fact that LINK KILLS GANON IN ORACLE OF SEASONS AND A LINK TO THE PAST, it's logical that Ganon can't be resurected because he would have to come from nowhere in Zelda II!" Neither of which are the first game in any timeline. In OoS, we have Twinrova trying to resurrect Ganon. Hence, someone killed Ganon. In aLttP, Ganon was trapped in the Dark World in a previous game. However, in Zelda II, there's something along the lines of Link's blood resurrecting Ganon, or bringing him back from the Dark World, or what have you. It's entirely logical that, since at the time, there was ONE OTHER GAME, and the Multiple Link theory wasn't yet necessary, Zelda II directly follows the defeat of Ganon in Zelda I. Imagine that. Logic. Since I'll probably get yelled at for provoking you, I'll just say this: let's keep it civil. I was frustrated, and don't consider "dammit" a swear, but all the same, I was rude. And I'm sorry.

Ocarina of Time: Ganon gets sealed in the Dark World Link to the Past: Ganon is killed Oracle of Seasons: Ganon is resurected and killed. Zelda II: Ganon's resurection is attempted again, but foiled. Between Zelda II and Zelda I: Link of Zelda II dies. Ganon's servants collect his blood. Zelda I: A new Link emerges after years of Ganon's rein. And...sorry everyone. I...don't have the best social skills and I unfairly reacted to him. Sorry. Forgive and forget, OK?

Alternately, my theory. I had this so very long ago, until I replaced it with the fluid timeline theory (i.e. the games are merely retelling a legend handed down orally, allowing for several contradictions along the way).
Ocarina of Time. At the end, time closes in on itself, sealing away Ganon and the seven years. Link remembers, and others remember it as legend. Zelda dimly remembers it, as revealed in Majora's Mask. Majora's Mask. L:ink is stuck in a time loop for several centuries. While Termina lives those three days over and over, Hyrule, being in another dimension, is not in the time loop. Centuries pass in Hyrule. Wind Waker's backstory and game form in the meantime. After the ending, the boy and Tetra go off to found New Hyrule. Link to the Past happens some years later. I never did decide whether it's the real Link, back as a thirteen year old boy with amnesia, who calls the man who found him "uncle," or just the descendant of some Hylian Knight. Zelda I happens, with Ganon returning again, and laying waste to the countryside, etc. After Link to the Past, Link and Zelda split up the Triforce, and such. It's, like, a few years after Ganon's apparent defeat in LttP. Then we have Zelda II as the most recent game in the timeline.

I'm not sure if that one jives because of Kakariko village existing again. I don't know if they would have named a village after a centuries-dead place with no real record. Apart from that it's a possibility.

Well, they did name several towns after sages from the same age as Kakariko...
