I exchange names between characters on my umpteenth playthrough.
For example, in FFVII. Yuffie is named Aeris. Aeris is named Tifa. Tifa is named Cait Sith. Cait Sith is named Vincent. Vincent is named Cid. Cid is named cloud. Cloud is named Barrett Barrett is named Yuffie.

Usually I choose to name a character what they were named originally by their creators when its an RPG. Othewise, I tend to go for names like Alexander and Nicole.
And then for certain games, certain names are repeated. In Havest moon games, I always name my dog Pogo, my Cows Kana (1, 2, 3, etc), my horse Pongo and my sheep Nana (1, 2, 3, etc). For sim city games (and some other sim games that allow naming of streets or the like), I always name Buildings and streets similar names after aliases and characters in older games i played. And streets mostly names I like. Generally though I try to go with whatever name is given because if i try to think of a name, I sometimes sit there for a long time thinking for just the right name...

I usually go with the defaults.
One time, though, I named everyone in FF7 after Sephiroth. It got very confusing. Even after playing the game many times, it was still hard to tell which Sephiroth they were talking about. |

Okay, for FFVIII, I don't play it because I suck at it and have no say in the names, so here is what my older brother names them:
Cloud - Calvin Red XIII - Hobbes Barrett - Chef (Pre-Super Adventure Club) Tifa - Averross Aeris - Averross Yuffie - Averross Yeah, I get it. Screw you, Jake.

I basically give them the most random names I can.
I've even gone so far as to name a female character Rex before. Don't ask.

I'm a huge fan of the Firefly series, much to my wife's enjoyment. My favorite character has to be Shepherd Book. So, usually I modify the name slightly to Shepard for male characters. And when you have those crummy RPG's that only allow 4 letters (playing Breath of Fire 2 right now), it shortens up kinda nice to Shep.
