I just love that America is somehow the big bad wolf when it comes to racism. I mean, do people think everyone just lived in perfect harmony and danced under the moon together before the 1800s, or what?

You can find evidence of racism pretty much as far back as back as people have been in disproportionate power-relationships (only because that seems to be the major requirement of this definition), which pretty much takes you back to the dawn of cities.

Awesome art be here.

It probably goes back as far as band-groups with more power hating and occluding other bands simply because they were other bands. Which was, at least, ethnic discrimination if not racial discrimination by modern definitions of race.

Though, to be fair, modern social definitions of race don't really make all that much sense.

Particularly in the US, I mean seriously, hypodescent? How the hell did you even make that sound like it made sense?

Oh, right, they probably didn't.

Also, what about mixed-race individuals? How white do you have to be to be considered a racist?
All I know is that my Peruvian dad lets me pull the race card when I'm applying for schools/jobs while my red hair grants me access to the local tennis club. It's win-freaking-win!

How you make it sound like it makes since is really quite elegant, and deeply related to this thread.

Racism.

If you're just a little black, that's more important than being mostly white.

I would argue that such a proposal doesn't sound like it makes sense to anyone.

It sounds like it's politically favorable.

And then you get all the people in charge going, "Oh man, fuck making sense, this is just going to be super useful in my plans to oppress people for personal gain!" And then, of course, they just go around oppressing all the people who would have any interest in pointing out how little sense it makes.

Edit: Though, to be... well, I don't know if fair is the right word. But, to be something.

To be unnecessarily verbose, it's pretty much exactly as nonsensical a system as most other systems of racial determination. I mean, I suppose technically Japan has this thing where it will assign you a different race based on exactly nothing, not even the way you look, but that's another discussion entirely. The only real difference between hypodescent and... like... patridescent or matridescent is that those aren't usually built around the focusing of political power.

Edit II: As I think about it... people with no concept of genetics trying to associate phenotypical race with actual patterns of lineage might believe stupid things. But, I mean, simple visual confirmation should lead you to conclude something closer to half and half, come on, people! But, I do feel I must admit that there are certainly some people who would buy that.

I don't buy into this at all. my school's old principal was very racist. She hated all the White teachers in the school, and was constantly blaming them for the schools problems. Racism works both ways people.

Not a good idea.
Actually as racist as America may seem, would you believe that Japan is worse? Unlike most modern countries, immigration and naturalization into a different country is [practically] as easy as 1-2-3 A-B-C. However, to Japan you must meet more than practical requirements. Language is a MUST, history, cultural understand, political understanding, right. But here's the kicker - you HAVE to have Japanese blood and descendance. Yes, it's okay to be half like me, but to be declared a Japanese citizen and exposed to 'gaijin' blood you can only be up to a third generation (mom or dad is the one who is half-Japanese).
Now, it's the government of Japan that really hates outsiders and quite frankly Japan teaches (to a small degree) that they are better than even the United States. However, the common citizen enjoys other cultures, it's the older ones who run the government that make Japan the racist country that it is.

Well that's different. Japan was made by the gods. ...I'm kidding of course.

There's no real discussion on how stupid this is. So, why would anyone go through the "racial tolerance education" just to get into a university?

I don't know. I wouldn't want to know.

Why be racist? Just hate everyone equally and you'll be fine.

By modern I assume you mean Western, because only North America, and to a lesser extent Western Europe, welcome outsiders into the citizenry so openly. Virtually all of Asia, South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East have very similar requirements to those of Japan. And if it isn't a blood requirement you basically have to be super super rich. You can go to a lot of places, but very few are actually willing to let you be an actual citizen and not just a resident alien or tourist.
