Cao Zhen, however, continues to follow the road, as grass is too green for his liking this time of year. You ain't got no K-Mart! |

I just reinstalled Diablo 2 because I remember it being fun. I remember how cool it was when I got another level and could finally take on the big man himself. I wanted to relive that. So I got it all installed and went on battle.net. What a mistake. Everyone I interacted with was an asshole of the highest caliber. I quit, uninstalled, and never looked back. I don't respect people who play games online, in fact I respect myself less for choosing a pastime that forces me to interact with those people. No one respects gamers, it's just that you are a big group with lots of money who are easy to pander to.

There are still many kinds of gamers that don't get respect... IE - 12 year old losers running around the EQ world begging for plat... Those who buy a game, then get gameshark and walkthroughs, and cheat their way to the end (Especially on online games like Warcraft or Battlefield)... Those who get so addicted to games (EQ, Diablo etc) that they lose jobs, girl friends, etc... But there are still gamers who get respect. The gaming community in general probably will never be respected by the average joe, until the whole world becomes gamers, because of the types of people previously mentioned. Too bad you can't make the people playing the games pass some idiocy test first... But yeah, because games have been with us so often, the world is slowly filling up with gamers, I don't know anyone who doesn't play games that is like, under 30. Personally, I own 6 NES systems (One of them a toploader), 3 SNES systems, 5 Gameboys, Gameboy Advance, Playstation, PS2, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, and easily over 150 games (About a dozen of them are Super Mario, NES :P), and I still have respect by pretty much everyone around me. People don't really care that I have had entire days dedicated to leveling in EQ, or that my Dragon Quest 7 file is closing in on 200 hours, as long as I don't act retarded about it. I don't pick up chicks by saying "Hey baby, I'm a level 54 Ranger on Lanys T'Vyl, wanna come back to my place and see my l337 epic?" It's all a matter of how you act in the real world, that gives you respect as a person, and if you want respect as a gamer, it is the same. Show your support for Final Fantasy, or Halo, or EQ (Well maybe not EQ), but don't make it look like you'll die if they don't release that new expansion on time... Just balance games with life, and you, we, will get accepted.

I personally ditest the fact that video games are becoming more and more popular. My school is filled with people who think that killing a prostitute in GTA3 or scoring a touchdown in madden makes them a gamer. What angers me the most is that now that videogames are a fad more people are buying crap like GTA, overshadowing games with actual soul. To quote Game Informer, "you can't expect the people who made Clay Aeikans album go double platinum to care much about soul".

Well consider this. If gaming is just a fad to them, then they'll be getting out of it sooner or later. Once that happens, we won't have to sift through the crap of pop culture games to find ones that are actually worth playing.

FRONT KICK OF DOOM!

lunarshadow, my condolences...
That's a torture FAR worse than death. Oh, and in terms of getting rid of commercials inside of a video game, should it suddenly be in Sony's Killzone that the main character drinks Type 01 Ispep for extra health during a blood fest before the game begins, I WILL learn how to hack the game and remove that section out of the game. DMCA or not, if someone doesn't want that commercial you sure as hell ain't gonna MAKE me watch it more than once. |
