Just watched it on DVR, pretty hilarious. Haven't heard about it being pulled though.
e: nvm, I see what you guys are talking about now. It was the behind the scenes that got removed, not the episode Last edited by Bard The 5th LW; 09-29-2011 at 04:55 PM. |

Oh, well, good. Good to know it wasn't executive politics or anything.

Now I'm just kind of depressed.
I'm glad to know that it wasn't a case of someone shutting down a possible relationship, but at least when I thought it was there was the feeling that some people were trying to be more progressive with children's entertainment and give LGB youth a relationship they could identify with. Now that feeling is gone, replaced with the knowledge that the closest we've come is a one-off joke in a behind-the-scenes video.

IDK, the subtext is still totally, totally there.

When a video that seemed to make the subtext into text is taken down for differing from the intentions of the series' creators, I'm not sure I can really look at the subtext that way any more.

Just another instance of shippers looking too deeply into something and screwing up.
Frankly, the over-the-top fan outrage towards the perceived censorship has been one of the most hilarious clusterfucks I have ever witnessed. The episode was good, and I didn't really see the subtext, * but eh. Even if I did, I wouldn't be surprised the video was taken down.

The problem wasn't the idea of them being in a relationship or wanting to be (because the subtext is totally there; I think it's pretty hard to read the lyrics in any other way). The problem with the Frederator video, the reason one of the creators expressed distaste for it, was the sensationalist treatment of the subtext.
I personally think it was a pretty garish leap from "There's subtext about Marceline having feelings for Bubblegum" to "WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HOW THEY'RE TOTALLY IN LOVE, FANS," especially considering the lack of input from the actual creators of the show. Then there's the aforementioned rumors that got passed around without any sort of verification. I think the idea of Cartoon Network pulling an episode of one of their most successful original shows ever just because of some non-hetero romantic subtext, when AT gets away with so, so very much, as do other programs, was just kind of silly on the face of it! The episode ran paired with another episode a few days later, like usual, unless my DVR is magic. On the whole, the outrage felt like a game of activism telephone, more concerned with anger than enlightened justice. It's kind of a shame, because I feel like it buried a lot of good discussion that could have come from the episode. The pain Finn's feeling in his awkward position among his older friends, and with Bubblegum in particular, came out all at once. And, on top of that, he asked them to start treating him with the respect he has earned instead of the condescension he tends to get. Also, did you notice that because Finn said he wouldn't fake the song, he didn't use his autotune voice? I didn't see anyone talking about that on Tumblr or anywhere else, all because of a big ol' raging overreaction to something that didn't even happen the way the rumors had it. Edit: I forgot how stupid the name on this account was... |

"mathmatical" actually reminds me of those gossip news shows. Which I think was the idea. And just like those types of shows it was more about stirring things up from conjecture then in any way being legitimate insight.
If there was one thing about relationship complexity I found interesting it would be Finn and Bubblegum, to be more exact the lack there of. When they were the same age their affection for one another was obvious. Though the moment she became older it was gone. Which to me shows that age gap really is whats keeping her away. Its not even like a societal constraints, its really an automatic dismissal of someones feelings based purely on a single factor, which apparently for her is even alterable
