I've never gotten any hate mail about The Dreadful. I've gotten a couple Emails regarding it, but they've been positive (I had hoped to be getting more fan mail by now but I really don't get much at all. Like two or three in the past year and 100+ pages ).
I've gotten hate posts about it in NPF though. And I got some hate-mail regarding the Epiclogue but that's all. I just shrug it off. It bothers me a lot more to get nothing than something. I get enough posts here on NPF to make me think I'm doing a decent job but I still don't feel like I've made much of a splash yet. It seems like more people on the site are talking about every webcomic except the one that's actually still being posted on the site. I really wanna try to turn that around, but I don't know how (or even if it's possible. And if it is possible whether I have the talent to do it.). I don't know how many hits the pages get when they update, Brian is the one who holds all that information. All I can go by is forum-buzz. I guess all I can do is try to do the best job I can and keep working to improve it. Hopefully it will hit with more and more people as time goes by. I think maybe if I start introducing more characters that might help. It seems the most successful webcomics have a relatively large cast and feature stories revolving around multiple people. The Dreadful really only focuses on one person at a time, so maybe that's where it is coming up short. Unfortunately I can't experiment with Chapter 5 since I'm almost done with it, so I'll have to apply this "more character" theory in Chapter 6.

Anywho, TL;DR: We talk about your comic more here than any comic that doesn't update at somewhat upsetting speeds. I'd say that's pretty good!

I'm usually extra hard on myself and tend to view what I'm doing in the most pessimistic light possible
So it's probably not 1/20th as bad as I think it is. Seems like this kinda mentality is the same in most artists/writers though. At least that seems to be the case in everyone I talk to. I can't imagine being perfectly satisfied, it would be a very weird feeling. Quote:

And it says, "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair."

On the off chance that someone is taking a trip down memory lane looking through those old threads, I wanted to devote my signature to say directly to you, I'm sorry. Thank you for letting me be better, NPF. |

The Dreadful is great. One of my favorite webcomics. The art, obviously, is top notch. The writing may not be as tight as Brian's stuff is now, but go read the first 107 pages of 8-bit Theater. Then go read your comic again. You're doing fine.

It's a healthy level of pessimism
It's not self-pity. It's... just an extreme desire to get better and to make the most enjoyable story possible. Thanks for the pep-talk everyone!
