Mauve, people WISH they could crank out stuff that good in MS Paint! Even people with tablets!

Speaking of which, I may actually sketch a bit more when I end up getting one again. Considering I'm going to hopefully be employed after this semester, I'm planning to make my next computer another tablet, which I'm going to buy when I have a comfortable buffer of money and all the latest sexy technology drops.

In the meantime, pixel art!

This is all done in 8x8 tiles. Eat THAT, Bob! And I'm only 22! :p

(note: this is just a preview to test the graphics I've been futzing about with, with the idea being to resemble old Game Boy games)

Actually, working in only 4 colors is at the same time challenging and rewarding. I currently have two human party members made, plus a rottweiler, cat, and tiger. Most challenging is keeping it in the 8x8 boundaries, because while some parts are a bit similar to working with FF6 sprites, those are a bit wider and taller, and in sprites, a few pixels can mean a lot. I've had to cheat a bit on the outlines, but overall, I'm pretty happy with what I have.

I'm gone from here for good. This place gave me many memories to take with me and shaped me greatly. I still care about you guys. I just can't stay.

Just a quick post before I go to bed. Working on (heavily referenced/basically drawing on top of a photo) realism. It's practice! XD

Gonna have to be a smidge blunt here:
  • Avoid patterns for a background image. Especially extremely distracting stock patterns. Completely detracts from the drawn image. A simple background or solid color works just fine for quick sketches.
  • Lens flare. Avoid it. Always. There is a very good reason it is one of the most universally hated filters to exist in digital media.
  • Seperate line layers and color layers. Doing so avoids the white-gray pixelation along the lines on darker colors. There are all manner of tutorials on how to do that.
  • Basic rule of weaponry (concept or otherwise) : Functionality, functionality, functionality. For everything crammed into one thing renders it nothing more than a grandiose and particularly dangerous doorstop.
  • There is no need to put in wording that it is your character that is your property and part of your story. We're all artists in here and understand at least the very basics of intellectual property copyright. Putting that line there is kinda implying that we're all a bunch of slackjawed thieves. More insulting than it's intention is trying to convey. A watermark or written signature with a date is really all that is needed.

Now with that out of the way: I couldn't sleep last night. So I doodled a fishman's head for funsies and then passed out. Was too tired and forgot to set the quality slider up, so deal!

I'm not sure exactly why the lens flare is especially hated, but generally the rule of thumb is artists should never use a photoshop filter in place of your own actual work. The lens flare especially rarely looks like it belongs in the picture rather than out of place. Like for example, most of your picture's shading looks more like cell shading, which is fine, but the lens flare isn't cell shaded, which doesn't look like it matches your picture. The lens flare can be used appropriately, but it's so common that people just slap it on wherever without much thought. I think that's why it gets it's bad reputation.

Can I just say I thought the carrot with the lens flare was hilarious and I saved it? XD

On another note, at first I thought Sqweeb was talking about my screen demo, and I was like, "Uh, that's kind of the point of tiles?" before I realized he was addressing Kyanbu. XD

Finished

David Tennant's face is really angular. It was fun using skin colors that aren't normally skin colors, like the blue on Rose's face and the greyishness of The Doctor's chin.

And woah, sorry about the hugeness.

...Is that seriously a painting? It looks like it could have been a photograph with photoshop effects applied to it.

Bravo!

Edit:I'm sorry my fellow sketchers for not contributing anything for quite a while! I shall when I get the time to.

DUde, I totally dig the Metal Gear pic, CJ.

This fish-headed guy from Skweeb is priceless, though!

I'm glad to see that the excellent artwork has only gotten better. Good job, guys!
