Anything that warrents that face, that is.

I was just saying "this is going to be a very useful reaction image".

Maybe, but aside from the "KO'd" sound effect for the benefit of the reader (even with which, I might add, a large number of people still assumed he was killed in the attack) there would be no reason for anyone to think Sollux wasn't just as dead as the other two people Eridan just hit with that wand.

Well, the other two kinda had holes in their chests. Sollux... well, okay, he's sustained quite a bit of trauma. But we know trolls can take a lot of trauma, and he has no external wounds, certainly no gaping wounds where his heart was supposed to be.

Bluh. Neither of us is gonna prove the other wrong. I might be right, I might be wrong, and we will undoubtedly find out soon enough.

And then come the gifs.

I wrote this giant thing by accident and now I'm reposting it here because I got 0% shameThinking about it, the whole death in Homestuck thing, I think I can figure why it's a bit more aggravating than usual.
Let's say, the Futurama episode with the dog. The episode was constructed around the dog dying. But because of the nature of the medium, a show that begins and ends in thirty minutes, we can see why the dog died, why it was necessary that the dog died, understand the drama behind it, and have a solid emotional response based on our understanding of the standalone thirty minute episode that we just watched. Same goes for other shows. Same goes for movies. In the context of these things which are self-contained and viewed all at once, even sudden, unexpected deaths seem to have a meaning.

But with Homestuck, though, it's just... it's another one of those archival vs serial reader things. Sure, we can see the warning signs in retrospect, but only then; everything else suggested that characters would stay alive a little longer, raise some mother grubs, talk to Doc Scratches, figure out black outs. All the things we've been introduced to through that character, and the things we see being worked out by that character, you'd expect it to be followed through by that same character.
Instead she gets killed very suddenly by someone with only a fraction of character development in comparison. At least Tavros and Vriska were roughly on equal standing when it comes to the net worth of their character development and exposure, you know?
There were things Kanaya could do and wanted to do which a permanent death just sorts of washes over and away.

But honestly? That's not the worst thing. Because at least you could say that those developments were there to ensure the effectiveness of her death, the emotional response from both the readers and the characters.

A little bit worse, but not THE worst, is the comedy bits. Which suggests that the death isn't serious. Even though the death dramatically speaking is pretty serious! But still, a SBaHJ panel? That's the kind of thing that you'd expect as an archive reader as a hint that the seriousness of the death should come in question, and whether or not that was the authorial intent.

But no, the worst things are the Unknowns, the false hopes. The sudden introduction of a relationship between her and Doc Scratch. The suggestion of an afterlife by Jadesprite and nightmare Feferi. The fact that nightmare Feferi resides roughly in the same place that Rose is blacking out to. The completely ambiguous nature of Rose's blackout. When you couple that with how Kanaya still wanted to do things, they become little hints of false hope for some form of revival outside the scope of current canon.
And those false hopes are pretty annoying.

Because with all things considered, the matriorb is shattered, the basics of Space duties have been passed on, and the only other factor which took up most of Kanaya's screentime, the only in-story factor which remains completely unresolved from Kanaya's perspective, was undeniably the relationship building that she's doing with Rose. And what if shipping just isn't that important to the story, considering the massive universal scope of the story? Relationships have been regarded as an important part of the story, but still. Not every relationship can be requited. And I suppose not every relationship can even grow to the level where the certainty of the requite can be determined by a confession. Which is the main thing that would put the stake through the character's life expectancy.
But them false hopes, despite the apparent and seemingly excruciatingly clear nature of the death, just sort of wants me to give Homestuck a break and wait until enough of the story goes along so that I could, in an archival way, see those ridiculous false hopes get snuffed out all at once. Because right now those uncertainties just make the death a little more frustrating than sad.

Is this silly? Does this sound silly to anyone? It felt silly typing it out.

Not so silly, it is kinda how I view all death. It is painful because everything a person could ever do is gone, and often the fault of someone they didn't even know. There might be some hope that they are somewhere but you have no sure knowledge to console you, all you know is they are dead. As far as you know forever.

Serious And now for something completely different

A little while ago I was thinking about Billious Slick and Lord English and I came to the following conclusion. As far as I know it is never specifically said that the Lord English summoning code is tied to the Troll's universe. In fact, the server running the code is situated in the void where the Horrorterrors are, which is the emptiness between all sessions, and the line of the code "import universe U;" could easily imply any instance of a universe will do. So basically it's possible that the code is just waiting for a Billious Slick to die (since B-Slick is the universe being created) and not necessarily a specific universe or Billious Slick.

So yeah, that's my take on how LE will come into existence. And in case it wasn't clear, it's probably going to be the Kids' version of Billious Slick that meets its untimely end.

I was going to say that since LE was running the Felt that it had to be the Troll universe, but then I remembered that with the whole scratch still being mysterious and Bec Noir having transfered universes it's possible for that to work.

I guess it could also be the Troll's Genesis Frog that dies, destroying the Kid's universe, to create LE in the Troll-verse.
