Well look at GTA series. The citie are one place but they vary so much. If you've lived in a large city or state. One place can be very variable.

Villainous Archmage
|
I would like to see an FF game in which a Black Mage was the main character, since every other game has had either a Fighter or a Thief in that role, and it seems kinda unfair that my favorite class gets left out.

Ah, a mage protagonist. Sounds good.
I'd like to see a huge cast of supporting characters, with scads of backstory meaty enough to make a butcher close up shop in shame. |

Along with everything that everyone heas said so far, I'd like a little more interaction with the weapons. Something like the gunblade in FF8 where you could actually do something while you attacked. I don't want to watch their attack animation for the thousandth time and not being able to do anything, I want a little more interaction than that.

There needs to be more Chocobo inbreeding and painfully obvious plot twists like the bad guy being the main character's sibling.
I really liked the way Sieken Densetsu III leveled up. Maybe you could choose the character's alignment too, or it is chosen for you by your actions, as the game progresses, but that would just be copying Fable. I wish that weaker monsters would avoid you. A leafer has no business attacking four level 50 characters. I know it could be suicidal because it is a leafer... but come on. Animals hunt for food, not to get killed before the battle begins.

Sometimes you need to hunt weaker monsters, because maybe they have an ability that you need to copy (ie enemy skill,) or they have a rare item that you can't steal the first time around.

You could make a "Hunt Mode" where your party goes out searching for weaker monsters (ie Turns on random encounters against weaker monsters).

A cast of Villians for your party members. Sephiroth, Kuja, Kefka, Garland... Think of the comedy!

A villainous team. Come on, fighter v. fighter, mage v. mage, thief v. thief... depending on your party, you'll face a different villainous party. If you think it's difficult to have a villainous bard, well, Adventurers! did it well enough.
It would totally kick ass.
