I think blowing up the moon is a great idea.
I mean, you know how America went to the moon 40 years ago? And humanity's never gone back? Well, that means that America gets to have its own little exclusive club that NOBODY ELSE gets to join EVER. |

Obviously, I was exaggerating, but really, the idea is stupid. We're generating a explosion people are going to be able to observe from Earth over a little ice. You can't tell me you don't think that's a mite overkill considering we've only regained interest after, what, 40 years of not caring(?) because India had the gall do do something nifty in space and we are nothing if not willing to blow everyone else out of the water just for our political wang. Seriously, a robot with a shovel could do the job without concerns over disrupting the moon's magnetic field, which, if we ever DO bother terraforming the moon, would be an invaluable asset for the same reason the Earth's is.

What about a series of prop units with a 10 - 20 ft long drill?

It's worked in the past. India managed it without disrupting the surface at all.
Seriously, here, we're pulling in the overkill. As just a rough guess, that thing's going to be plowing enough moon-soil out that short of doing the same thing again, the water we don't reach would be expensive and time-consuming to possibly prohibitive levels. And for what purpose, exactly? I REALLY highly doubt we're colonizing the moon in the near future, given we still haven't colonized a large chunk of Earth, which would not only be cheaper due to accessibility, but would be just as cheap or expensive in actually building whatever bubble-domes or other crap we'd need up there, without having to worry about bringing out own air.

And a robot could do it, but it would cost more, take more time, and have a much, much greater chance of failing. |

Does this seem to anyone else like a way to get around the fact that NASA currently has collectively about as much funding from the government as Octomom?
