Basically, they wanted a Snake that would listen to orders.

Even so, he was fighting for what he believed in. He wasn't fooling around with this crap for fun. He, like anyone, would have no good reason for going back to war and fighting except for that reason. What else is he supposed to do? Stand around and watch the patriots and ocelot eat the world?
Raiden would still be a recruit; the patriots didn't have much of a chance to get disbanded and to leave Raiden lieing to do whatever he wants. Anyway, snake came in and screwed it for the patiots. Bottom line, snake knows what he's doing and how to do it. If he doesn't he will find a way to carry himself through. Through his experiences he has, in his own way, become a near-perfect fighter-warrior-soldier-- whatever you want to call it.

(Proof of his survival abilities, FOXDIE hasn't killed him yet while his brother (with the *SAME* genetic code died almost in contact.)

EDIT: BTW You guys. On substance there are TONS of documents to read. I read a whole bunch of interesting crap-- side stuff on Shadow Moses. To lazy to type about it but there are pages... tells you about grayfox's suit and how he was revived. All sorts of stuff. Might wanna take a look (under special I think)

Snake doesn't get all the credit... Octagon probably gets most of the info for Snake.

And Liquid is still alive, not by his own doings, but he was able to take over Ocelot.

It wasnt' the same genetic code. While, Liquid & Solid are similar, there's differences. The reason why Snake's still alive might have something to do with his hardy constitution, or it might have other factors. First of all, I would think that programming a virus as complex as FOXDIE, would be difficult.

Snake's name was added to the list at the last minute. Thus, its entirely possible that it was a crap job and it might not kill him.

Plus, Doctor Ican'tremember, didn't want Snake to die until the mission was over. Because of that, she had to impliment a random killing date that she isn't even privy too. That being said, Snake could live at least 40 years with the virus until it gets him. Or he could go out in another 2 minutes.

Actually, both MGS games had back story docs ofr your reading pleasure. MGS I had everything up til then, then MGS II had a detailed account of the world after Shadow Moses. Along with MGSI's script, from the viewpoint of Ms. Russian Weapons Expert.

I'm not sure of that. I don't recall ever seeing any documentation about Grey Fox's suit. Of course, that might be because I didn't check back after I beat the game, or it might be that information is only on the Metal Gear Substance disk.

Now for the real MGS fan.
Cyborg Ninja's (fox) suit is based off the suit that a boss uses in MG2. I assume it was a early prototype.
The difference between Extreme and European Extreme is simply: There are more one-hit kills, less ammo spawns, and general frustration. 24 Metal Gear RAYS--the entire squad fights you.
MGS 3-- I am a big supporter of the Big Boss theory, as since E3, the evidences only got stronger.
The New (old--1960) Metal Gear is most likely 'Metal Gear Hornet'. I cant remember the link to the forum post with the guy who came up with this theory. Buts heres most of it. The cut-out puzzle they handed out in E3 assembled to look like a hornet. The newest video mentions "Honeyed Espionage". Also notice--H"One-Eyed" Espionage. The video also shows snake fighting a swarm of bees, with a knife. The cave he goes through is Octagonal(much like a nest)--So is 90% of the shapes in MGS2.
