FRONT KICK OF DOOM!

Yeah, it's like blaming RA Salvatore for the Anita Blake series being a horrible creation with plot holes galore.

So we are clear

well my experience is DnD stories boil down to either "you want X , Y is guarding it, kill Y and get X "
or "There is a X trying to destroy/conquer the world... should probably look into that"

Am I speaking english here? That isn't the fault of the game. Given some of the stories we've been trading around I'm surprised you're being so stubborn about this.
What about Meister's floating islands and airship cargo adventures? What about EvilNESS being the villain to take over the world and corrupt every good member of his party? He even got a paladin to fall from grace! EDIT: Reading through this thread reminds me just how strange some people's different tastes can be. I find it oddly humorous that the first things people claim they don't get are competitive games - Halo and Smash and Street Fighter for example - which is like my favorite thing in the world.

I once ran a game that wasn't adventuring, so much as political BS that lead to the adventure. If all you're doing is questing and you're more apt for mystery, I'm pretty sure the DM could go "Screw the rules, I have plot"
In mine, I had a queen that knew one of our adventurers. As the plot came to be, they knew each other as kids but she had finally gotten everything she had wanted. Or so everyone believed. She cared for our priest from what she had known about the past. However, he took a vow of chastity when in his priesthood. Such was needed to keep his divine powers. He had affection but nothing more. As DM, I kept the king a little on the slow side. But he'd had a problem with a rebellious group of vagabonds in the area. Guess who was urged to go and adventure and take them out? Yep, group A, our most boisterous fighter and rogue duo without a priest. While this is going on, the priest and the queen talk about their childhood. How they get to the places in their lives. The queen, of course, is dismayed at losing touch with an old friend. She gives a hug, to which the king walks in. He had been wanting to ask his queen where the other parts of the party were (our priest, The two wizards were out exploring the city, causing a riot that involved the guards, rebel alliance, and quite a few anarchists that wanted to stir up trouble. Suffice to say, the group wasn't allowed back and the fighter and rogue did that mission for free. The priest turned emo, eventually turning into a dark priest which REALLY F'd the group over when they were expecting a gentle romp through a moderate dungeon. Honestly, it's all in how you play and have your own fun. |

Actually, if a Final Fantasy game did that, let the villain win and no matter how much the heroes try, they fail, I would be interested. |

On the rhythm game front, I strongly disagree with the notion that they have stopped people from picking up real instruments. I think that the people who play Rock Band exclusively were never going to learn to play real guitar ever. If Rock Band/Guitar Hero had never of came out, I still wouldn't have picked up a real guitar.
On the main topic, I really don't understand people that listen to video game soundtracks. They're fine

Sure, if you want to be annoyed by it, a lot of stories can be brought down to
The world (your nation occasionally) will be destroyed unless you do something (can be someone's masterplan or just a plain old disaster), fix it (occasionally, "you" want to destroy/enslave the world, but not that often) You want to kick ass, get some items to do so, this will probably lead to having to save the world. If there's no effort to make the world and characters interesting, that can be a problem, but with effort, good things can happen. |

VG Soundtracks are great to listen to as there are alot of talent behind them. I prefer listening to VG music because in some respects it is better then other stuff. For me, it can get my creativity going, enabling me to write. |

People are too picky.
I don't get people who complain about remakes or reboots or whatever of series. I mean, I'll admit I was quick to come down on Left 4 Dead 2 on not being different enough from the first game, but that was mostly because I'm not that into FPS and online multiplayer, so the main thing the first L4D had going for it for me was how different it was. But take Mario or Megaman or Zelda or Dragon Quest or whatever and I am playing that because I like the formula, and a new plot/gimmick/weapon is enough to sell it to me. I figure right now we've got a decent enough balance of people trying to bring some freshness into existing genres and games that are purely unique on their own terms, that we aren't going to suffer because somebody is remaking Pokemon Gold.
EDIT: On the subject of video game music, it's a mixture of things. A lot of it is actually pretty damn good, so listening to it is the bees knees. Another thing is that you mentally associate the music with your experiences in the game, both the scene where the song was used and the game as a whole, so if you liked the song and the game, there is a real emotional connection to the music. *removes monocle*
