SO.. 8 Bit theater 2 - Page 5

To be honest, I think with ~~a little~~ tweaking, 8 bit theater would ACTUALLY work as a story for a real video game. Just tone down the characters' extremeness a little and replace jokes with drama and you got yourself the first Final Fantasy without a handsome, intelligent protagonist. (Since BM isn't handsome and Fighter isn't intelligent. The other's have less "screentime" and thus don't count.)

I actually can see a toned-down Red Mage as a good, yet slightly deluded, excentric strategist, for example.

White Mage would end up rather akin to Katara from Avatar: The last airbender. I especially point towards Katara going from an innocent Hope-freak to almost murdering a man near the series end.

Fighter would have his stupidity toned down, while BM probably would have more of those rare "Maybe I should try the other side" moments he had sometimes.

I don't know if the result would be a particularly good game, but it would definitely be a nice idea for an RPG with a cast consisting of amoral jerks + one naive guy.

So basically, it would work as a game if you changed huge chunks of it so that it barely resembled 8-bit?

I wouldn't call it "barely".

It's kinda like dissassembling a prebuilt lego-building and reassembling it in a different way. The pieces are still there, the context is just vastly different.

...Like trying to turn Shakespear-comedy plays into dramas about WW2.

Actually, there have been several attempts to make an 8-Bit Theater game (all by the same guy and they all failed).

I can only see an 8-Bit Theater game working if it was A - a point and click adventure game and B - had no relevance to the plot of the comic beyond starring the characters. A sort of one-off adventure, like the Metal Gear Solid movie.

I purpose an 8bit game starring Onion Kid throughout the series.

At the end of every level he finds happiness. At the beginning of every level Black Mage ruins the happiness you just obtained.

If a new 8-bit theater is made... I think it should be 16-bit, FF5 sprites with some editing should make pretty nicely for the characters if it still follows BM, Fighter, Thief and RM.

I was going to make an 8-bit theater adventure game with the Adventure Game Studio once. Black Mage made an evil pie and then it got stolen and you had to find it. It would have been pretty awful if I had followed through on it.

Although...I did have the fantastic idea of letting you swap Red Mage's stats around during play time, in order to solve puzzles. I think in retrospect that actually could have been a fun mechanic for a short game, plus could have allowed for some amusing slapstick, like if you set your luck too low you get spontaneously zapped by lightning or something.

...

So maybe not THAT amusing.

Everything else was going to be absolutely terrible though. I wonder if I still have the files around somewhere.

I do not think a sequel should be made, there is a limit at how much someone can add to a story before inspiration runs out. But I admit, a random page here or there would be fun.
