So, to get the Prothean squad mate, you either have to buy it as DLC or get the Collector's Edition that it comes free with. It doesn't come free with the regular edition. Problem is, the Collector's Edition is sold out.

I still feel the need to know why they felt it necessary to bend preestablished canon over a fence for the sake of a nonmandatory DLC character with minimal impact on the plot.

it seriously would likely take much less bullshit to just say they emancipated a collector and now he's on your side.

It would take less effort to come up with a way to say a Collector has been emancipated, something that we have no evidence whatsoever of being possible and has been established before as a sort of "the only freedom is death thing", than it would to say, "Oh, hey, a life support module based on old-ass technology we don't even know and could do whatever the fuck was able to keep a single Prothean alive long enough to be rescued by us"? NOOOOOPE.

COLLECTORS:

-observed to exist in the present time
-are alive in the present time
-the DLC guy is basically a collector with a mouth anyway, as opposed to what we were led to believe protheans looked like for the last two games
-some resistance to indoctrination has shown to be possible in extenuating circumstances
-entirely possible that one could have been captured for study at some point in time
-while forced deprogramming is unlikely, it is theoretically possible, especially since the tech exists to put a human back together recognizably out of overcooked hamburger and space dust.

PROTHEANS

-they all dead, yo
-been dead for several thousand years after being explicitly hunted down and genocided
-the only ones other than this exception known to have survived the purge are described as surviving purely due to being on an otherwise unremarkable planet with no other sentient life, and therefore was not a target. This guy, however, was apparently a front-line fighter who was in the thick of it all, which should make his survival chances smaller, not larger.
-EVEN ACCOUNTING for the above, many of the protheans in question died because of how long it took the reapers to fuck off, a vastly smaller amount of time than the gap between prothean death and the current games.
-Accounting for the above, it breaks verisimilitude to believe that Protheans had super advanced cryo technology they used for a single special soldier that they didn't use for the critically important anti-reaper think tank.


emancipating a collector may be "impossible" within the displayed canon, but so is this asshole, and emancipating supposedly-unsaveable members of a hive mind is an established sci-fi trope that the audience is willing to buy, whereas "prothean survivor" violates the rules set down by the fucking game and he's apparently not even fucking plot important.

the game's setting and rules are getting fucked by both options.

ED: what I'm trying to make clear here is that if you have to use "oh well its technology we never knew about, even though it violates the previously demonstrated tech of the group in question!" to justify including a minor side character and doing it in such a way that violates the central canon of the work, then you have failed as a writer.

3. The other Protheans died because the computer shut off their life support so *it* could stay alive. Also, there was a giant ass teleportal there.

4. Part of what fucked over the ONE life support place we've seen could be the fact that there were so many of them there. It is well within the realm of possibility that there were in fact smaller ones that would then use less energy and didn't have a computer killing them off to keep itself around.

So, until we know why the character was kept alive, how they were kept alive, where they were found, how they were found, etc, getting upset that the character exists is ridiculous. The game comes out in two weeks. Perhaps you should wait until then before deciding a character you know INCREDIBLY little about has fucked the universe canon always and forever.

said giant-ass teleportal was shut down until just before Shepard arrived, also it didn't exist at the time because the aforementioned prothean team built it. you know, after most of them died from cryo age. As for vigil, considering that a tiny ship like the Normandy can run an AI as well as high powered weapons systems and a FTL drive simultaneously without too much trouble, not to mention Legion being mansized and mobile, AI support clearly doesn't take that much power.

except that unless the small unit had a power source the same size as the illos base, the law of proportion comes into effect and we have the same goddamn problem.

I sincerely doubt that bioware is capable of satisfying verisimilitude at this point, considering how dodgy their attempts at retcons have been in the past.
