You guys really think those 50 hours of your life you spent watching LOST are going to be justified? I can't even justify the five or six hours I spent playing Megaman X7 before shutting it off in disgust (and it cost me like 28 dollars), I'm never going to live down watching 4 and a half seasons of LOST.

Yes, that's right, five or six hours of MMX7. I live with the shame every day of my life.

EDIT: Well, yeah, I guess it's true that Ben acts as his own little sort of Deus Ex Machina in that anything he says can be retroactively made out to be a lie if the writers need it to be. So actually this just sort of means the show sucks even more.

I'll focus on Sayid, then. "OMG I HATE BEING A TORTURER. I WILL NEVER TORTURE ANYONE EVER AGAIN. OH, YOU NEED SOMEONE TORTURED? ALRIGHT LET'S GET TO TORTURING. DEAR GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE? I VOW NEVER TO DO SUCH DESPICABLE THINGS AGAIN--OH, YOU NEED ME TO BE AN ASSASSIN? OK LET'S GET TO ASSASSINATIN'." If it were delivered with a little more of the "Imp of the Perverse" implied, like he secretly enjoys hurting people even though he hates himself for it, or something, it could maybe be pulled off, but LOST is not the venue to expect drama or logical character reactions from.

It's been a while since I've really watched the first and second seasons but wasn't Sayid upset that he had tortured an innocent? He didn't want to torture after having been taught how to but was told that some day he'd need to get information and now he had a way. From that logical perspective, he needed something from Sawyer, or Shannon would die. That went to the lengths it did because Sawyer thought he deserved to be tortured.

He blames The others for Shannons death, so that explains his anxiousness and readiness to tortures Ben. Then his wife gets killed off island and Ben tells him a bunch of people are to blame. He even provides evidence that the same guy who's been hanging around Sayid was speeding away from the scene. That was just a matter of grief. I mean, I understand what you're saying, but none of these so called illogical character reactions are really that big of a jump. Twice his romantic partner has been killed, and both times he sought out those responsible. That's not that illogical. Maybe a little impractical, and somewhat crazy, but hey, people deal with grief in a lot of unhealthy ways.

The biggest issue is that he trusted Ben. People really need to stop doing that. And, "oh look I have a file!" Always with the files. Everyone always believes it when they have files.
